Kiwis...

Very shallow quake with a lot of surface movement. I hope all our Kiwis are safe and well and your families also. Mind you with a population of 4.4 million I'm sure you know someone affected.
 
The photographs coming out today are devastating.

Mixed news.....most of my friends are alive and safe (but for a few minor injuries)...most have lost their houses or discovered their homes are in the middle of a lake where once was road and grass.


Unfortunately a number of people I used to work with are amongst the missing........no one knows what has happened to them.
 
Sorry to those who have missing or have lost loved ones. My family and I send you our thoughts and best wishes in this sad time.

I'm still waiting for news of a family member but the area they are in is on the outskirts. Over 50% of Christchurch doesn't have power so with overloading phone services and no power I might not hear anything for a few days.

So many countries have been so wonderful offering support, money and sympathy.

I know what its like. My sister was in the middle of the Brisbane flood and we had a similar problem.
 
yesterday night was the first i heard about this - so much damage, in such a populated area :(

wishes for the best of outcomes to all NZ members and their family/friends :rose:
 
Ahh my thoughts are with them. :/ Some of the coverage we've seen is horrendous. :(
 
Best wishes for our NZ friends, help is on the way...last report raised the death toll to 75 with an estimated 300 still unaccounted for...know that we have you in our thoughts....from the Western USA...

The amount of assistance that's been offered to Christchurch is pretty incredible. For example, the blood service says they probably won't require any more donations of blood for 2 weeks because everyone just rushed in to donate. It's heartwarming to live in a country that feels like a giant village.

We were lucky that we had no damage to our house. We have just got it fixed from the 7.3 earthquake in September. My wife and I went into Christchurch last night to see how my mother was in her rest home. The damage that we saw was bad and we didn't see the worst.

Powerful images, Byron. I hope I don't upset anyone by posting this one, which seems to me to capture the awful effect such a natural tragedy can have on those who are subject to it. One's mind boggles at what it must be like to get up one morning and go to work and then have the earth shake and shatter your personal life so intensely.

I can't even imagine the pain and anguish of holding Lady P's hand while she dies as a result of something so unexpected and brutal.

Perg, that one and the very last image are some of the most heartwrenching. The last one shows two teenagers and their father crying on the sidewalk after having just been told there is no chance their mother can be rescued alive from the building she was in when it collapsed. Can you imagine? I can't even begin to. :(

Nope. It's horrible. It looks like Port-Au-Prince did. The one difference is that the Kiwis have a lot of resources that the Haitians didn't have. That doesn't begin to take away the horror and tragedy though.
 
Did you just post a picture of a dead guy? It's a bit soon for fucks sakes. I don't want to see that shit. Is he dead? Has he even been buried? That's not how we roll in NZ.
