Now when I ask this question I'm not asking in the sense of trolling as I hate (and naively so) that an author wouldn't do that on purpose. Well I've never given one and honestly unlike a lot of people when I read a story I will always vote and usually a 5 or maybe a 4 but I figure if it held my interest for that span of time it was pretty good. Now stories I think really suck I never make it more than partway through so I don;t vote. I have sworn I would never give a one just because maybe I ma soft but I feel everyone puts work into their stories and is proud of them. To me a one bomb is almost like slapping someone's kid.

So today I come across a story (I will spare the author and not name it) on the story spinner. It was so godawful that I kept reading waiting for it to be a joke. Then it became that train wreck type of situation. By the time I was done i was appalled the thing got published it was the most juvenile dumb ass thing i had ever read like a beavis and butt head episode. I had my finger on the one and still didn't click it. Judging by the 2. something the story was rated I would not have been alone (trying to think of who gave higher than a two) My point is I am wondering am I just really soft? Has anyone else out there given them? If so why?

I'm with you. 4's and 5's are my main thing. If I make it all the way to the end of the story, they're gonna get at least a 3. If I don't, I just won't bother voting.

I gave somebody a 2, once, for a story that was riddled with grammar and punctuation errors and had a plot that was so thin and so hackneyed my eyes nearly bled. It was like a train wreck. You know. You want to look away, but you can't look away. You want to see just how awful it's going to get, and then it exceeds your wildest imaginings.

I should have given her a 3. She was very, very brave. Much more so than I.

I thought you were talking about one of mine. But you said story. :p

Link? I'm up for a good laugh.

I've never voted anything below a 4, but for the story you mentioned, I might have to make an exception...

You know it came up on the spinner and I certainly didn't bookmark it. Not even sure on the authors name. The name of the story (and there was more than one chapter!) was Markus Steelcock. The story I read talked about how "Markus" literally fucked a hundred women. I mean as in they were lined up and he gave them all a fucking as he made his way down the line and there was an announcer over a pa system describing it! Like I said really beavis and butthead, now I'm trying to remember the damn category. Ugh now you got me thinking about it again.

That doesn't sound so bad, actually. It's kind of like one of the fantasies that waft through my head when I'm standing in line at the DMV.

I hope you find the link.

I've never dropped a one-bomb on a story, although I did once on a poem. I left a PM saying it was like a third grade English assignment that was given a D Minus.

If a story is that bad, I would stop long before finishing it, and not vote at all. Once in a while I may give a "3" but even that low is rare. :D

You know posting that link qualifies you for the BDSM section you know that right? These people did nothing to you.

What? Am I missing something? Did I violate some sort of unwritten rule of these forums? Or written rule, for that matter?

If so, mea culpa, and I'll now feel like crap for the rest of the night.

I'm only kidding hon! I was just saying how bad it was and now people will read it. It's like saying "Oh that's gross, want a bite?" No rules broken I'm just playing around. I will say though that I am petrified of google with my own stuff because last time I did it i found my story lifted on another site so I play ignorance is bliss now.

Oh. OK. My online teasing detector doesn't work so well.

Didn't work for me, though, as I didn't read it. It's not really my thing. I think I'm just so used to my mom's daily calls asking me to google something for her, to buy something online for her, to remind her how to check her email, to walk her through logging into facebook etc. that I automatically did the googling. It's like a Pavlovian response or something.

My bad. I'm from the east coast where sarcasm is an art form and we are rude and drink waaaay to much coffee. I find google an amazing tool for writing. want to know where a character in Chicago would go to eat? google 5 star restaurants in Chicago and pick a name!

Am I the only one who believes in rating things how I really, truly feel? And knowing now that votes get swept if they're not 'like the other votes' pisses me off because my votes when I low vote on stories I think are shitty don't count and will inevitably get erased. I know this because I had one story get a few one bombs and they've all been removed. And I think they should have stayed. I earned them by earning someone's hate. (shakes fist)

I do not only five vote things. I have left my share of votes across the spectrum. Why do they have the one if we're not supposed to use it? Now, a story does have to be truly awful for me to leave a one and I've only ever left a couple... but a story also has to be truly amazing for me to leave a five. Why should five be the default vote? Five should be awarded to the masterpieces, not just the extremely long fuckathons.

I usually leave three or four votes. Three for 'well, it wasn't riddled with errors and didn't make me stab out my eyes but I know you can do better yet' and four for 'I liked it'. Two is 'are you fucking kidding me' and one is 'my eyes were bleeding by the time I was done'. I reserve five votes for 'you should've published that instead of wasting it on the internet'.

I suppose I am alone.

(reads the story in question) Ahahah! It must be satire. I hope. (dying) It's hilarious!

Never one-bombed a story -- even the one that described the heroine as wearing "Hello Kitty berets" in her hair. Took a while to figure out that the author meant "barrettes". Hey, you know...starts with "b", it's typically worn somewhere in the vicinity of one's head, and the spell checker verified it was a real word.

If it's below a 4 or 5, I usually just refrain from voting. I could imagine voting a 3, but I think most authors deserve a lot of credit for having the stamina to finish a story, and then having the guts to post it here.

If a story rates a 1 or a 2 in my mind, I usually don't persevere to the conclusion. Once in a while however, a story is so compellingly awful you're like bird hypnotized by a snake, you just have to keep reading until mercifully it ends. Then I'm too stunned to score it or leave a comment. ;)

Hahahahaaha! Oh, yeah. That was freakin' awful. I made it to the end, but I broke my own rule. I HAD to give it a 2.

It was such a short story, getting to the end wasn't all that difficult. For some reason, it actually has a fairly respectable 3.71 score, according to the index page, although that isn't up to date. The guy must have a lot of friends or else owns a lot of computers. There is actually one H there too.

I didn't vote, because I didn't want to dignify it that much. :(

Yes, I've voted ones a few times. I'm judgmental, and critical, and not ashamed of being so. ;)

Okay, I had to read it. It was awful, but thankfully it was short. I gave it a two. I didn't want to do it, but I felt I owed it to him.

But knowing that the vast majority of 1-votes are removed from the ledger by the sweeps, don't you realize your judgements could be all the more damning if you doled out 2's that counted instead of 1's that don't? I think you're missing out on a great opportunity here, Stella.

Don't vote often on the stories or submit for that matter as I am more of a poet than a fiction writer. I have given one to a poem once or twice but in those cases it was a catastrophic combo of shitty writing and nauseatingly perverted subject matter of 'i just fucked your dead budgie and I'm headed for you dog' level.
