I'm new here, and I joined so I could have a place to publish a story I'm currently working on.

I was curious as to how active this community was. It seems like it might be dead or dying (but then again I've only been a member for two days, so I can't really judge yet). Can anyone refute that?

Hi, Kernl, and welcome to Literotica and the AH in particular. :) This is a fun place to hang out and discuss politics (or argue the subject) and to ask about writing subjects and to show pictures of grandchildren. This place tends to be pretty active. There's a contest underway on writing stories for Valentine's Day, as well as an annual contest that demands writing a wide variety of erotic tales.

Why refute it? You have a bad attitude and you are welcome to it.

Run while you still can!:D;) I got sucked into the dramarama here and keep being lured back...

Welcome

We're not all like amicus - he just hates everyone and everything, although you did kind of ask for it.

This forum is pretty active, but you will find pretty much the same group of people cropping up quite a lot. However, it is one of the most active forums I post to, so welcome, enjoy yourself, and I look forward to reading something of yours.

Agreed. I was just being a smart arse.:D:rose:

I don't think amicus is a bad guy, actually I think he's a really decent guy.....well, back to lurking before someone actually has something to say to me.

::checks her wrist for sign of a pulse:: Well, I seem to be alive today. ;)

No, seriously, I've just returned to here after a couple of years of non-posting and am having a blast. Of course there's drama (we're writers, after all), but for the most part the people here are awesome. Welcome!

Kernl, before you get your chicken really toasted, people here sometimes get their sticks up (as the hockey players say) a wee bit. Just take down their number, and if they turn their backs, ride them into the boards. Just make sure the ref and linespeople aren't looking. Or, much better, remember Marcus Aurelius: "The best revenge is not to become like them."

As for a lot of discussion, I'd rather be writing. But then again, as Sylvia Beach told Ernest Hemingway, "All writers ever talk about is their troubles."

=D Why thank you, everyone, for the warm welcomes.

Mind if I bother you all with a mundane question? Is there such a thing as a story that's too long? Because I started out writing it, and kept going, and thinking of what would sound good, y'know how writing is. Well I'm typing it in Google.Docs, and the print-preview says it's 24 pages, and word count says 10442. Is that too lengthy for one story? I'd prefer not to break it up into parts. It's not written to be broken up like that. When I submit it, will that be a problem?

Don't sweat it. My longest multi-part work here is over 180,000 words, and I frequently post stories up to 30,000 words, although I do occasionally get comments that I write elegant drivel. Although reading the forum it seems five to seven lit pages (which I think is probable about 5-7000 words, seems to be better as people are not so keen on longer works. Having said that, most of my stories in certain categories have have 100,000 views.

Psssst! hey other authors pipe down! We don;t want him to know the truth; that we really are all dead and now he is too and he's stuck here with us for all eternity!

I prefer my stories to be (if well written) 21 to 35 word pages long (three to five lit pages). If they go beyond that, and can still keep my attention, I'm in hog heaven :D

Thanks for the reassurance. I'll keep that in mind. :)

I often write long stories because I don't have enough time to write shorter stories.

Each author has his or her own preference, but I have noticed the general population of readers prefer shorter (no more than 4....5 tops...Lit pages) for a story. If it goes beyond that, they might bookmark (or favorite) the story for later, but then again, they may just lose interest.

Many authors (myself included) submit their stories in chapters. It keeps the readers' attention and keeps them coming back for more.

Your choice, of course, it's your story and as I said, every author has his/her own preference.

Welcome to Literotica and the AH. Make yourself comfortable, but watch out for the troll poop. It accumulates faster than we can clean it up. ;)

Ah, thank you.

I wish people would give credit where credit is due, rather than leave people like me to assume it's original. Y'know?
Mark Twain did not say that. :rolleyes: he said;
'“I didn’t have time to write a short letter, so I wrote a long one instead.”

he was talking about the time and effort of editing.

This is true. I think you're right. I'll probably end up changing things so I can submit it as a series. That'll probably work best.

He stole it from Mark Twain.

JBJ is wrong (again). Mark Twain said something like it but it originally came from Pascal.

"Je N'ai fait celle-ci plus longue que parceque je n'ai pas eu le loisir de la faire plus courte.--I have only made this letter rather long
because I have not had time to make it shorter.
" Pascal. Lettres provinciales, 16, Dec.14,1656.
Cassell's Book of Quotations, London, 1912. P.718.

So maybe it was Twain who stole it.
