I actually looked for the answer to this question, but couldn't find it, even in the FAQ section.

What are the numbers that are in parenthesis after the stories on the index pages?

Thank you

They are the averaged voting scores for the story. When readers vote 1-5 on a story the votes are added together and averaged. A story that gets 4.5 or better with at least 10 votes gets a pink 'H'.

Where you see 'x.xx' it means either that no votes have been cast or the author has turned voting off.

The scores are a pretty good way of discovering stories worth taking a look at.

It's Also a Way

to break a writer's heart. When you see a story you cut out of your guts get bombed, and people don't even bother to comment when they bomb it, that hurts, chum.

It can be tough, but as some were saying in another thread, this is random feed back from random people, not peer review. If it will bother you, you should turn voting off.

PennLady, you know I won't do that. It'll bother me, I'll vent and bitch, and then I'll go back and try again. By the way, I just e-mailed you a draft story for technical advice. See, I'm still crazy after all these years.

There is Some Other site that has an expanded form of voting called TPA where readers rate you on the technical aspect of the story (grammar, punctuation), the plot and the personal appeal the story offers.

Even when there are no comments, you can get an idea of what needs work.
