The Construction Thread

A bit of work in Utah starting tomorrow.

Construction on $1.2B Spy Center in Utah set to begin this week

Construction on the $1.2 billion Utah Data Center in Camp Williams will begin on Thursday. The 1-million-square-foot facility, formally called the Intelligence Community Comprehensive National Cyber-security Initiative Data Center -- also known as "The Spy Center" -- will be used by the National Security Agency as a repository for information gathered by the different branches of the U.S. intelligence apparatus. design build = fucked up and over priced

Design-Build isn't f'd up.

It does seem to cost more but most time it is used time means more than money and it does cut a lot of time off a project.

Even with the project designed before build there are Change Orders.

There is a thin line separating a change order and a design build. Change orders keep everybody honest. You forgot the piece of gear than needs electrical in the corner? No problem. I will run the wire and charge you for it.

I worked a design build that the prints were not signed off on until AFTER the floor was finished. No change orders. Change this, change that, but do it on your own dime. It was a fucking nightmare for the builders, a dream come true for the owner.

I'm working on a design build right now for a car dealership. Fucking PITA.

Ok, here is the schedule...can you make that...sure, I just need this information...my guys are ready to start working....dum de dum dum dum...you got that info yet?...ummm...no..hang on...ok, well, I gotta start this other project then....5 more fucking jobs done and I'm still waiting for where the trim angle goes around the roof, a shop full of material and no fab drawings...piss me off

Like any job, it's nice if the owner can communicate their wants and needs.

...$25 /hour...$40 /hour if you watch...$50 /hour if you help...

Sometimes the owner is better off letting the people that do this stuff for a living do it.

No, you need change orders, then everyone gets a piece of the pie. This is a Government job, expect thousands of change orders.

Homeowners who live along the New Orleans side of the 17th Street Canal have filed a civil suit against the Southeast Louisiana Flood Control Authority-East and the Orleans Levee District to stop a project meant to strengthen the floodwalls along the canal. They are concerned about the potential noise and possible damage to their homes and yards -- which they feel have already been encroached upon by the levee and floodwall project.

And then the next lawsuit will be when the unstrengthened floodwall fails.....

But one guy had to move his mother in law suite...likely an illegal use anyway.

I'll tell you something...you wouldn't get me buying the house at the foot of any levee...fuck that...but yeah, it is a good spot to house the mother in law
