Yeah, the Magnetic pole shifts, I think it is called progression or some such. The science guys aren't running around screaming so I guess we're going to last until the next elections anyway.

If I may be permitted my usual audacity in challenging a thought, Mr. JackLuis, take a gander at the SAA south atlantic anomaly. This in an area in the South Atlantic Ocean where solar radiation is so intense that air craft and the Space Shuttles have been routed around it.

Every 400,000 years or so (who's counting?), archeologists have determined that the Earth's magnetic poles shift; north becomes south and south becomes north...no biggie right? Well, again, according to the scientists, the scheduled reversal is about 25,000 years late this go around.

Some scientists state that the SAA is the beginning of that overdue magnetic reversal. NASA says don't worry, no one has ever been injured by a polar magnetic reversal...ahm, who was around 425,000 years ago to say ouch?

Some scientists predict that when Earth's magnetic poles reverse, that it will be an Extinction Level Event (Thanks Tea & Deep Impact), because the reversal happens slowly and large areas of the earth will be unprotected from lethal solar radiation.

There is a lot of science behind all of this, but if you want the links, go find em, I done did that.

It could well be that the world wide bird kill is related to a shift in polarity and there may be worse on the way...but...as in Deep Impact, why tell us dummies we're gonna die anyways?

I doubt that the effect would cause the damage noticed in Arkansas, however the thought of a magnetic pole reversal happening over, what months, years and the funneling of damaging radiation sweeping over the equatorial latitudes, causing who knows what, that freaks me out.

I was starting to feel better about my future.

The periodic reversal of earth's magnetic poles is well documented. There was a NOVA ( a science-oriented program(me) on American PBS ) episode on the subject a couple of years ago. We are, in fact, overdue for a reversal. I hope I'm not around for the next event.

You can't feel it, but the Earth's magnetic North Pole is moving away from its home in Canada's far north. The implications of this are being felt at some airports which align their runways to the points on a compass.

As Steve Newborn of member station WUSF reports, the move has actually shut down a runway far to the south in Tampa.

STEVE NEWBORN: The magnetic North Pole is not a fixed object. It's continually moving. It's actually racing from Canada to Siberia and that has officials at Tampa International Airport a little busy today.

Mr. SCOTT LOPER (Tampa International Airport): Over 100 sign panels need to be changed, 40 signs, surface-painted signs, a lot of work going on.

NEWBORN: That's Scott Loper at Tampa's airport. They've had to shut down their main runway for a week to repaint the signs that help pilots navigate around the airport.

Pilots have traditionally flown with the help of a magnetic compass, and runways are designated along the points of the compass. The runway known as 1-8 Right - for its place at 180 degrees on the compass - is now found at 190 degrees. So up went the barricades, and the airport's jets will have to use another runway for a week while its approach numbers and signs are repainted. Loper says it's not just Tampa International feeling the sting of the shifting North Magnetic Pole.

Mr. LOPER: Atlanta, I believe, is going to have to close some of their runways to start their process. Last year, we had West Palm Beach that had some runways they had to do.

NEWBORN: The idea of using magnetic compasses in this age of satellites and instantaneous communications may seem quaint. But Loper says it will still be a while before aviation officials can steer away from the designation.

Mr. LOPER: You have your GPS's - that's more based on true north and longitude/latitude because it's satellite and better fixes and stuff like that. So it's getting more precise, but they haven't made the change yet.

NEWBORN: And they may yet be caught again. The magnetic poles are still moving - and in the past, magnetic north and south actually switched places. But the last time that happened was 700,000 years ago.

The deaths of thousands of blackbirds in Arkansas may have been caused by the recent repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," according to a self-described "prophet" who once claimed the ability to banish "gay demons."

Evangelist Cindy Jacobs said on a video posted over the weekend that the strange phenomenon, that has now occurred in various places across the world, was an "answer" from God for violating his principles concerning homosexuality.
