I am on Step 4 of a 12 step recovery program, which includes taking a moral inventory. As a poet, I often find I am most truthful when free-form writing. I found a list of 194 common character defects and I intend to write "all of a sudden passion suddenly" type of exercises in this thread.

We all have all of them. It's a matter of degree and opportunity. It's hard to imagine a person who might have the time indulge in all 194 defects in a single day. There would be an angry crowd following them.

Poetry is a good way to explore one's own nature. Instead of self flagellation over your self perceived flaws, I suggest you write biographical poems which explore how these flaws made trouble for you and those around you.

this first drug of choice. Proof positive: I
exist, I feel, I can make things happen see
it is in my sleeve, it is holding my hair back
off my face. I exist, I must see it is in my hand
I control what is free, what is earned, what
is given. I can see now

eyes open, un-sheilded by a false-perception:
my substance, not significant enough
to cause harm to matter. This half-hope
of being caught with crimes big enough for
attention, validation, but not enough
to pay the penance of a twisted
morality. That would come another day.

Thanks Bronzeage! I agree, self-flaggelation is never helpful -- the desired outcome is to be able to give these defects over to a higher power, to be able to be aware and more forward.

Be careful of what you cast off. You may need them later. There is nothing in human nature which is not useful at sometime and in some amount.

I've never seen an enumeration at such length. Such a list is just a starting point to provide focus.
And assuming that you follow your 4th step with a 5th step there may well be stuff you won't want to post on a public page, but instead just with God and another human being, perhaps your sponsor.

You're beginning now on your action steps.

Thanks EO-- these are more like exercises to help me get focus, as you have said. But you are right, maybe I should reconsider writing these out in public. Truth is, I have already written about most of them one way or another, just put them together in one place here.

btw: Working step 4 with sponsor and therapist. Too much of a bridge jump risk for them to let me do it untethered or at least highly padded and without sharp edges. Will move through step 5 with them as well.

I hope you are not moving on. People who actually write poems are scarce around here.

When writing poems, do it just for the sake of writing as good poetry as you can, without any other goal. Only then it will give you peace, will be healing. If you start writing a poem with the idea of attaining a goal alien to poetry, like healing yourself, and if it spills into your poem, then you'll lose the healing effect, and your poem will suffer too. When doing poetry let nothing else exists but the world of poetry, let everything else exists via poetry.

Thus, in my opinion, it'd be simpler for you to write on topics not directly related to psychology, at your present state. You need to be detached to write good poetry.

I guess that's the 2nd commandment of lit.

When writing poems, do it just for the sake of writing as good poetry as you can, without any other goal. Only then it will give you peace, will be healing.
