And if those bowl-season stats seem bloated, try this: Ohio State and Alabama each spend more than $31 million a year to run their football programs, while nine other teams closing out the season at one of those 35 bowl games spend $20 million plus.
The cheapest bowl-bound program? That would be Troy, winner of the New Orleans Bowl on the first postseason weekend, at just a shade over $5 million. That's nearly $23 million less than they spend an hour away at top-ranked Auburn, where the Tigers are playing for the national title this season. Auburn's opponent in the BCS game, Oregon, spends $18 million -- 16th among the bowl-bound schools.

Do universities in other countries run entertainment businesses like this?

Hats off to Boise State and TCU. Competing with these giants, hanging in the top ten, well, that is an amazing feat.

Whats your point.

They make money off of it so that you don't have to pay taxes to run the University.

Wrong.

The Texas athletic program boasts that it sends back an average of around $1.5 million a year to the school. Its football program netted a whopping $68 million in the 12-month period ending Aug. 31.

1.5 million is squat for running a major university. And as a business, net profit margin of 2.2% isn't that great.

should we have more regulations on this subject? we know that obama doesn't like the business community. so should we 86 all football games?

What does Obama have to do with it Jenn.

Can you not post in a thread without making it political?

Can you not offer an opinion of your own on the actual topic?

It beats fuckall.

There are a lot of regulations on what Universities can make money on.

Up here, we have a University that some old guy donated a 10 storey seniors home to when he died.

The University had to kick all the residents out and turn it into a student residence because they are not allowed to own income property.

Obama is actually for a college football playoff. Although I still wouldn't vote for the guy, I like his thinking on this subject

he's a fan of football, no doubt

i like how he carved time out of his busy schedule to call the phildelphia eagles and congratulate them on sticking with michael vick, yet didn't have time to reach out to the families of 2 firefighters who bravely gave their lives last week.

it's not like they're from his hometown or anything :(

Big-time college football is corrupt and idiotic. Why not simply dispense with the farce and admit that D-1 football is a cost-free minor league for the NFL?

The colleges are getting away with murder because the players aren't allowed to be paid for their services. The athletes are being ripped-off. It's a gigantic racket.

Allow the big-time college football universities to incorporate their programs and sell off the ownership to the highest bidders.

As far as I know the US is the only country that does anything like this with its college sports teams. And there aren't sports scholarships to universities over here, either.

Scholarship athletes go to school for free, get a stipend and free meals. How are they getting ripped off exactly?

How much is an NFL quarterback paid? How much was the Cameron fellow paid this year?

How much was Sanchez paid at USC? How much does Boone pay the b'hoys at OSU?

His? I thought those boring posts and pretty fonts could only come from a woman.

*ducks*
I did too originally, but I thought I remembered some pretty green post that seemed to imply the ownership of a (useless and neglected, obviously) penis.

You're out of your realm here, just stop. But I'll answer your silly questions with more silly questions...

Is the NFL quarterback a starter or third string? Is he the top pick or a 6th round pick?

Who the fuck is "Cameron?"

Oh, you mean Cam Newton. He wasn't paid anything. His father admitted to soliciting his talents to another school school before he went to Auburn, it was reportedly $180,000.

ETA since you edited: Sanchez was paid nothing. T. Boone pays the players nothing but they do have some kick ass facilities.

The better question would be, without college, how much of a chance would any of these guys stand in the NFL?

The 'minor leagues' argument is silly. A baseball player in the minor leagues barely makes enough to cover routine off-season expenses. College guys on scholarship, with everything covered, including free tutors, health care, meals, lodging, travel, etc., is probably making $50k a year. Over four or five years, that's $200,000-$250,000, for 'minor league' experience that gets them their NFL contract. And that's just the legit stuff.

What's the complaint, exactly?
