Rule Change Needed - Plagerism

Far too often on here over the past 4-6 months I have read too many stories that are posted on other websites by other authors that are being copied and claimed as their own. Alot of us have noticed this, and commented about one writer in particular who seems almost tooooo prolific in his submissions, doesnt allow comments - which doesnt give us honest people the chance to challenge this plagerism, and even after I have talked to many readers on here who said they have all complained about this same person, and even told LITEROTICA where to find these copied stories, nothing seems to be getting done.

This is unfair to not only the TRUE authors of these stories, but also to the readers here who know they are copies and are just as frustrated as I am about nothing being done. It is also not fair to the authors who post their 'OWN' stories here.

I have read too many comments about Clinton09's stories at the end of other ppls stories and in general chatting not to realize something must be done!!!! and SOON!!!!!

I like others think maybe there should be a rule change to reflect the following:

1. No more blocking comments on stories - plagerized stories can be easily pointed out this way.

2. If a report of a story being plagerized is submitted, all stories from that author should be put on hold until it is fully investigated.

3. Should even one story be found to be copied, this author should have all his stories pulled, and put on notice with a notice from LITEROTICA stating that this person 'was banned' for plagerizing.

4. Maybe even something as simple as a box that ppl can click to say they have read this story before elsewhere would solve this problem.

Respectfully submitted...

PS. I encourage others who feel this way to please speak up and make Literotica take notice and stop this blatant plagerism. After all it is not only immoral, it is also a CRIME!

Now there was a real intellegent remark. How old are you? 42 or 4.2

This kind of problem should be taken up with Laurel.

Do not look for help on the GB. Writers are looked down on and considered to be mentally defective.

actually. laurel doesn't really care. the best thing to do would be to tell the author whose work has been stolen. they're the ones who theoretically own the copyright so they're the only ones who have any right to get a story pulled.

Thank you for writing, and I hope you are well.

We've received complaints from readers regarding this author. However, none of the complaints contained 1) links that show that the work is plagiarized, or 2) an email contact so that I could write the complaintant and ask for more information.

We are staunchly support author's copyrights, and remove any plagiarized work as it is brought to our attention. However, as many of our authors write on multiple sites under multiple pseudonyms, we do not like to accuse anyone of plagiarism without doing some research first.

I have checked Google and other sources for the stories reported and could not find any of the stories on any other sites. If you could send me a link or links to where the story is posted elsewhere, that would be a great help to us.

For future reference, when reporting suspected plagiarism, use the REPORT feature (the little triangles) at the bottom of every story to bring it to our attention, AND please provide links to demonstrate that the work is plagiarized.

Thanks for your help. We appreciate you caring enough to watch out for the rights of legitimate authors.

I wrote this exact response on another website last year.

Thank you, Laurel and Manu for all the hard work you put in. :)

What about if an author has posted a story or poem somewhere else and decides to post the same work on literotica too. Is that allowed? Not exactly plagiarism, but not fresh work either...

Although I don't think any of my writing has been plagiarized so far, I do have a lot of sympathy with Raven's complaint, even though I also realise it's difficult to actually do anything about the problem.

I agree that this suggestion might help a little: No more blocking comments on stories - plagerized stories can be easily pointed out this way.

Unfortunately, however, accusations of plagiarism aren't always justified.

I posted a story titled 'Charlie Garrick' (writing as jimmyjoyce, not polynices) in 2007 and was accused of plagiarism in the very first comment:

This Story Has Been Posted Previously

Don't know if this has been re-posted by the orignal author or not - if not, THIS STORY HAS BEEN STOLEN!

Since the accusation of plagiarism wasn't true, I used the comments facility to defend myself and wrote a long refutation. (Both the original comment and my reply are still there: see http://www.literotica.com/stories/showstory.php?id=304932&page=4 if interested.) My point is that it's very easy for an irresponsible, anonymous commenter to make wild accusations. There's no real come-back.

(Perhaps the solution may have been to ban anonymous comments altogether - I believe I have that option if I choose to use it. But I haven't done that because I understand why more responsible commenters may still prefer to remain anonymous.)

My basic point, then, is that, although it really would be a good thing to challenge plagiarists through their own comments sections, that can lead to false accusations as well. And to be falsely accused is very annoying, especially if you've put a lot of work into a story.

I've been doing it for years. What Lit. asks for is nonexclusive use rights. That means the author is free to publish it anywhere else they like as well.
