Believe it or not, I was a kid once. One time, I called someone a "fag", and my mom asked me if I knew what that word meant. She then explained it to me, explained the weight of the word, and suggested I should be more careful about using it in the future. What an utterly odd thing for a parent to do, right?

Personally, I think it sucks - and it belongs in the context of this thread and whether or not I'd want him teaching my own kids (if I had any).

If my kids are using offensive language in front of me, I challenge it. if I over hear them, then I ignore it. This doesn't mean to say I condone the use of the words, but it means I understand how context for young people has changed. Like it or not (and this goes for Zumi too) because black people have reappropriated nigger, then it is now out there and is consequently used by young white people in a non-racist way. a 12 year old calling his mate 'nigger' is quite different from from a 32 year old calling obama a nigger and if you cant see the cultural shift, then you need to catch up.

So it's okay for someone's son and his friends (presumably white since the daddy's white) to use the n-word to describe "people" because (presumably) their favorite rappers and Chris Rock and other assorted black people use the word liberally like drinking water and that makes it okay...

and I would never in a million years call anyone nigger. Same as I can't call someone disabled a spaz or k/cripp (despite being nearly goaded into it by an activist).
