You have to apply these two rules:

1. Read a lot.

2. Write a lot.

I know it sounds flippant, but it really is the only way. Like most things in life, you will never get good at what you do unless you practice.

If you're interested in a particular style or genre of writing, then seek those authors out and read their stories. Lots of them. Pay attention to how they structure their sentences, how they mix things up (stylistically), and the choice of words they use. Ask yourself, "Why did they choose that word?" Or that tense, or that imagery. Read actively.

And when you're done reading, sit down and WRITE! Mimic the style of the authors you love most. Experiment with constructing sentences in ways you normally would not. Dare to fail, but whatever you do, don't give up. A writer writes, so make sure you do it every day.

If you read and you write, every damn day, you will soon discover that you, too, will know exactly how to put things into words. The advice is simple, I know. But you really have to Do it, if you want to do it.
