As Britain finds itself in the middle of the political maelstrom surrounding WikiLeaks' Julian Assange, and the debate over Internet freedom resulting from his arrest on an Interpol warrant, British authorities are stepping up their efforts to wield more control over the Internet.
The UK's coalition government is discussing a plan that would see all pornographic websites automatically blocked in an effort to keep children from accessing them.
Read the article for more on this, it is too long to excerpt and I wanted to talk about a different aspect.
Under the proposed plan, which appears to have the backing of Britain's major Internet service providers, the government would provide ISPs a list of objectionable websites, which the ISPs would automatically block. An Internet surfer would then have to "opt in" to be allowed to see the content.
I presume that the "Opt in" will take the form of some kind of question-answer response. So why don't they ask, "Who was President Carter's VP?"
If the answer is 10 minutes late in answering, then it is interpreted as an 'incorrect' answer and rejected, this to counter the looking it up with Google.
The next question would be different and harder, again the 2-10 minute time period will apply.
Since the ISP knows, or could know the location of the 'applicant' they would after several tries know if the person answering is qualified to read the porn.
I realize that this has holes and isn't Fool Proof, but hey.
My point is that by formulation the questions, and having a large stock from which to draw, perhaps some College Board exam questions would work, we might make our electorate more educated?
However, the sticking point would be, just as having the Government select the sites that have to pass the exam, is as tricky as determining the questions, and "Correct" answers. Who decides what is 'Porn"? What is the right answer to, "Isn't Obama Care a Government Take over of the Health care system?"
We seem to be at a point where we accept that the "Government Knows Best," or we decide that kids should know where babies come from and why.
