Hi I normally submit my stories by pasting them in the box. However I am writing a 6 chapter series that because I am using a lot of bold italics I am submitting as a word document. Now i haven't done this before and not sure I am doing this right. When I hit browse and select my file and preview it it gives me Text options and western european appears to be the default but when I preview it all i see is a bunch of squares and symbols. For the hell of it i clicked on all the text options (korean word, chinese simple etc.) and all i keep seeing is these boxes. is something wrong? or is that how it is meant to look until the site goes through it?

Did you submit it as an attachment? Or did you put the Word doc in the box?

If you submitted it as a file, then I don't think you can use the preview function because it will show all Word's formatting commands - the boxes are normal if you try to read a Word .doc as simple text. If you scroll down far enough, about 5 or 6 A4 pages, then you will find your text but it will be scrambled, with formatting commands breaking up the text.

Thank you

Thank you! That sounds right that I'm only seeing the "boxes" then. thanks for your reply!

I think the real question is why you are using a lot of bold italics in your text. This is rank amateur and publishers don't normally even permit bold in text.

But for copy and paste into the submission's box, all I do is code these between angle brackets and they come out fine. <i> at the beginning of italicized text and </i> at the end. And I do this for a twenty-chapter series as well as a single story.

Thank you.

First off thank you for your response. I took down the word doc and after doing as you said pasted it in and the italics were in the preview. It was a little tedious but worth the piece of mind.
On another note I suppose it's "rank amatuer" well because I am an amatuer and this is an amatuer site. We are not all as high falutin' as the Excessia crowd. anyways thanks again my friend.

Usually adding the coding as you go is the easiest way. I had a few stories in the past where I submitted it as a .rtf with the formatting and it got all screwed up once posted to Lit.

With the last couple of stories I wrote, I wasn't sure if I'd submit them here as well as my publisher, so what I did for italics was made the word or phrase red, then I can go back and add the coding later with a read through or during editing. The red made it easier to find the italicized phrases.

There are a couple good pages on the Writer's Resources page on this site you can refer to as well:

And the Writer's Resources page itself is chock full of helpful tips and advice:

Basically, you're better off adding the coding as you write or going back through and adding it later. Takes more time, yes, but the wait for your story to appear "live" will be a bit less because the moderators/editors will simply copy and paste what you've put in the Story Text field.
