Oh, dear, oh, dear.
The emoticon is a lot older that that. To my certain knowledge, it was used by Telex (RTTY) operators both on tape and "live". Maybe more primitive, but the meanings were there. Not quite sure of the names, though.
I can understand the idea of disliking their use, mostly, I suspect, because (all too often) the user does not use them properly.

I will not be stopping my use of emoticons. It is not my responsibility to keep other people away from things that they don't like, and I am glad that I don't have to live by their likes and dislikes.
