Though I am a sexual conservative on most issues, I feel that prostitution is one rare area where society would benefit from a permissive approach. In fact, prostitution was long accepted as necessary evil in western society and it was liberals and "progressives" that worked to ban it in the 19th and early 20th centuries. In many traditional Catholic countries its always been legal. Men need sexual outlets and as many wives and girlfriends refuse to have sex with their partners, not to mention the ugly or repellant men who can't find a partner, prostitution serves a potential service to the greater good of society. So, my support for legalizing the activity is NOT based on permissive, libertine, or libertarian beliefs, but more of a traditional sense of utilitarian right and wrong.
That said, what is interesting is that in fact just the opposite has happened over the past four decades. While EVERY other sexual behavior that was traditionally considered immoral or illegal has been legalized and legitimized, prostitution remains the only one that has not. One can only scratch one's head and ask why? The obvious conclusion, so obvious in fact nobody's sees it, has to be anti-male sexism. The vast majority of prostitution has always been from men paying women for sexual activity. Since the feminist movement took over western society in the 1970s, feminazi's have had near total control over all facets of life in the west. One of their key goals was (and is) to make men subordinate to and dependent upon women. One aspect of this is to take any control of sex away from men and give all control over it to women.
Since the vast majority of prostitution is and has always been men paying women for sexual activity, keeping it banned permits women to hold all the cards when it comes to sex and thus ultimate power in relationships and in society as a whole. To legalize (or decriminalize, I'm not going to get into haggling over words here) would allow men to say "screw you" to their wives and girlfriends when they try to use sex as a tool to dominate the relationship and shift the balance of power away from the women. Also, the price of prostitution would likely come down to market levels and allow even the low income man a shot to participate, thus further shifting societal power balances that now favor women.
