I wonder if most people find porno as unsatisfying as I do.
There are so many things I find disappointing about them.

Any storyline is abandoned within seconds.
There is no groping, no reticence, no resistance.
No lifting clothes out of the way, but within seconds both combatants are naked.
It is good to see what's going on, but I don't need to see everything all the time; those weird poses the guys take up so that we can see clearly penetration are so unnatural.
Why does every sexual encounter have to involve oral sex from both parties, then multiple positions?
And, finally, why does it have to go on forever?

Do any of you folks agree with me?

Porn is never really about plotlines. Its just a quick possible attempt to make some awkward sense on why these people ended up in the same place together. I do sometimes find that a bit frustrating (especially when they come up with the stupidest reasons for it), but honestly, the people responsible for these videos know that 90% of their audience doesn't care on the plotline- simply that there's something to stare at on their screen... Even if they do end up recycling the same clippets over and over to make the scene.

The other 10% of us are the ones who end up laughing at the videos for being so stupid. Really, I can't watch much anymore without ending up making fun of what's going on within a few minutes.

To me, it's just yet another example of how anything, once commercialized, loses any subtlety, nuance, or in fact any qualities not deemed by the marketrons to be the most simplistic, distilled essence of what they think people want. What's worse is that people conform their desires to what is put in front of them.

All diversity is squeezed out, or at least partitioned off into rigidly defined niches. If it's believed that people want to see shaved pussies, then all pussies must be shaved. Anything that deviates from Porno-normal has to be turned into an outrageous fetish.

If you want to see an unshaven pussy, then that must mean you want Super Hairy-Scary Furburger Supreme! If the standard cum-shot (yank it out and spew in slow-motion into her mouth, which she has to hold wide open in a goofy-looking gesture, like a fish out of water, while the guy jerks to completion) doesn't do it for you, well, then you must be a cream-pie fetishist. Never mind that that has more to do with a fascination with watching semen drip after the fact than where it went and how it got there. Everything must be an extreme example of its kind. If you get tired of seeing emaciated women, you should be thankful that you have the option to fetishize extremely fat ones.

If it's a foregone conclusion that imagination, creativity, and real diversity have no place in porn, all that's left is to make it a freak-show.

Even much amateur porn suffers from trying to imitate commercial porn. The best stuff, in terms of being sexy by virtue of being real, is sometimes the porn that circulates on P2P networks, that was never meant for public consumption -- but of course there are ethical issues of a different kind with that.

I think the best thing would be something approaching Open Source porn, or Creative Commons erotica, where people collaborate to produce something they would like to see themselves. There are crowd-funding web sites that could allow something like that to be viewer-funded, though porn would probably violate the terms and conditions for most of them.

But I think that even an all-volunteer, totally non-commercial effort could potentially be interesting. Literotica has plenty of creative and talented writers who could collaborate on screenplays, and even people who like to share pictures of themselves. True, anything hardcore couldn't be hosted here. But the point is that the talent is out there. It would just require some coordination. And the Internet is pretty good for that.

I think you should check out European movies. The French particularly tend to do very good erotic films, which have an actual story line, and IMO are much more arousing than the more graphic content.

The graphic stuff is really exciting initially, but it gets boring really quickly!

There is something of a movement to make better porn. But thats always going to be limited as far as plot (in the classic sense) goes. Plus, most people in porn can't actually act.
Ultimately, porn is targetted: get the viewer off.
Given that, plot really isn't going to work, much of the time.
I, personally, would like to see more porn that acknowledges the goal and then works within that framework. There's a new 'line' called Club 59 that seems to be trying some new things. Their first release 'Girl Crush' was pretty amazing. The second, less so, but still...
And there are others, studios trying to come up with stories where the sex is part of the story, not just tacked on.
I also think that female targetted porn is going to get better long before male targetted.
Ultimately, its return on investment. You can make 50 movies in a month, knowing that at least a few of them will give you decent profits, or you can make one, and gamble.

Yeah.

But there seems to be this gap between the "graphic stuff" which gets boring because there's no variation, no build-up, and no story; and stuff that is erotic, but never gets explicit. I think there is space for a middle ground between these that encompasses the erotic and the hard-core.

In my opinion, it doesn't necessarily have to have a plot in the traditional sense to be exciting. But I think it's usually better when there's some kind of build-up or progression before the explicit sex scenes. And the tired conventions of commercial porn just gets ridiculous, and, as you say, boring after the initial excitement wears off.
