Are the two themes incompatible?

Wouldn't worker rebellions of this type pretty much depend on things like a literate populace?

The boilerplate idea is a leader or heir is deposed by his/her enemies and the way they get back into power is to lead the common folk against the existing power structure.

Also.. can steampunk get along with magic in the same universe?

Good one!

I do see that steampunk as a genre has become pretty banal-- lots of gadget and fashion fetish, lots of steam and very little punk.

But as always, it's what you make it. Have you read "Perdido Street Station"?

or Neal Stephens' "Diamond Age?"

I've read Diamond Age but not Perdido Street Station. But Diamond Age has nanotechnology and no magic at all, IIRC?

No magic, nope-- but class struggle aplenty.

Google might have some answers for you.

I dunno... As far as I'm concerned, "Steampunk." is an element, a material, a style. Like... plaid flannel. What you make out of the plaid flannel is up to you.

Hmm, my metaphor could use some work. :D
