There's no end to Obama's Opulence

This is a country where people live on less than $2 per day.

Obozo's whimsical jaunt would support 100,000,000 natives every day that He and Cowbelle are there.

Really sad. Especially considering no one in India even likes muslims.

Except for the 100 million plus Muslims who, uh, live there right now.

I don't know why Obama can't just stay in youth hostels overseas and fly coach, like Dubya used to do. The uppity-ness of the man knows no bounds!

I'll give Obama this, no policy that includes interdicting an enemy entrenched in Pakistan can go forth without the support and input of India.

Well, fuck.

You make it sound like it's almost a good idea.

For 200 million, I bet the Indians would rather come here.

Small change, The Fed is going to print between 500 billion or 1 trillion dollars before the 15th of the month. They haven't made up their mind about the amount yet.

Didn't say it was a good idea, just a regional reality. I still don't think he had to travel there to accomplish an agreement.

Of course, if the President of the United States had to restrict his travel because security costs were prohibitive, that would be a win somebody, wouldn't it.

The link you cited quotes an unnamed Indian government official, and they are always reliable sources.

Fox news seems to have missed this scoop, but they are probably too busy tracking down the LA police jet pack story.

I gotta say this doesn't pass my BS test. This doesn't sound real at all.

McCain would be making state visits to some places, is the point. What difference if he visited Mumbai or London or Shanghai or Bogota? It would cost roughly the same money, and the money would be a negligible fraction of the federal budget, as now.

Maybe he wouldn't be taking 3,000 of his closest friends. Maybe he'd just take a few staffers and a trim security staff.

Holy shit, you'd think he was God.

US to spend $200 mn a day on Obama's Mumbai visit

Mumbai: The US would be spending a whopping $200 million (Rs. 900 crore approx) per day on President Barack Obama's visit to the city.

"The huge amount of around $200 million would be spent on security, stay and other aspects of the Presidential visit," a top official of the Maharashtra Government privy to the arrangements for the high-profile visit said.

About 3,000 people including Secret Service agents, US government officials and journalists would accompany the President. Several officials from the White House and US security agencies are already here for the past one week with helicopters, a ship and high-end security instruments.

"Except for personnel providing immediate security to the President, the US officials may not be allowed to carry weapons. The state police is competent to take care of the security measures and they would be piloting the Presidential convoy," the official said on condition of anonymity.

Navy and Air Force has been asked by the state government to intensify patrolling along the Mumbai coastline and its airspace during Obama's stay. The city's airspace will be closed half-an-hour before the President's arrival for all aircraft barring those carrying the US delegation.

The personnel from SRPF, Force One, besides the NSG contingent stationed here would be roped in for the President's security, the official said.

The area from Hotel Taj, where Obama and his wife Michelle would stay, to Shikra helipad in Colaba would be cordoned off completely during the movement of the President.

Vetteman claims that "unnamed Indian official" is a reliable source. Too fucking funny....

About as reliable as anyone in the Obama administration. No one, travels with the massive entourage that Obama travels with.

That's why when President Bush served Thanksgiving dinner to the troops, he took Delta flights for his midnight runs to Iraq.

He was being frugal.

I suspect he'll have luck finding some sacred cows as well. Maybe he'll bathe in the Ganges while in India.

It'll help him reconcile the fact that the voters have exercised a level of "civil disobedience"...ya know, all Ghandi-like an' shit.

Obama Taking Armada of 34 Warships With Him to India…

Apparently Obama is planning to invade India…

(NDTV)- The White House will, of course, stay in Washington but the heart of the famous building will move to India when President Barack Obama lands in Mumbai on Saturday.

He will also be protected by a fleet of 34 warships, including an aircraft carrier, which will patrol the sea lanes off the Mumbai coast during his two-day stay there beginning Saturday. The measure has been taken as Mumbai attack in 2008 took place from the sea.

Obama is expected to fly by a helicopter — Marine One — from the city airport to the Indian Navy’s helibase INS Shikra at Colaba in south Mumbai.

From there, he will drive down in Lincoln Continental — the Presidential limousine — to the nearby the Taj Hotel.

Two jets, armed with advanced communication and security systems, and a fleet of over 40 cars will be part of Obamas convoy.

Around 800 rooms have been booked for the President and his entourage in Taj Hotel and Hyatt.

Something Is Terribly Wrong With This "president"!

Obama’s trip to India has a carbon footprint bigger than many US cities

Carl Pope, executive director of the Sierra Club, wrote in January 2010 in the Huffington Post that President Barack Obama is “the greenest president ever.”

Well … maybe not. You see, today we have these headlines:

The Daily Mail: Forty planes and six armoured cars: Obama visit to India the ‘biggest ever by a US President’

NDTV: US to spend $200 million a day on Obama’s Mumbai visit

About 3,000 people, including Secret Service agents, US government officials and journalists, are accompanying the president on his trip to India. Several officials from the White House and US security agencies have been there for the past week with helicopters, a ship and high-end security instruments.

Of course, we know that US presidents don’t travel lightly, and they need security details and armored cars. But 3,000 people and forty aircraft?

Let’s do the carbon math:

Estimate of the carbon footprint of President Obama’s trip to India

We are constantly told how bad air travel is for the planet. For example, the UK has a whole organization, called “Plane Stupid,” dedicated to the issue. It is groups like this that enable us to calculate the carbon emissions of air travel using the handy dandy Terrapass web page.

1. If one assumes that all 3,000 people fly commercial from Washington, D.C., to New Delhi and back (and nowhere else), their cumulative carbon footprint can be calculated according to Terrapass at http://www.terrapass.com/carbon-footprint-calculator/#air.

Here’s the info on their calculation methodology.

So here’s what we get for the maximum number of people, ten, that we can select at one time on that website. Note that Bombay, India is now called Mumbai, but the airport code is still BOM in Terrapass:

Multiply 62,238 lbs of CO2 for ten people times 300 (to make three thousand) and we get 18,671,400 lbs of CO2, or 8,469 metric tons.

To get the per capita figure in metric tons, divide that again by 3,000 people, which gives us 2.823 metric tons per person for the trip.

2. The Brookings Institute did a survey in 2008 ranking major US cities by their per capita emissions. You can read the full report here. If we were to compare his trip to the city table:

Obama’s trip comes in between Memphis and Raleigh on a per capita basis.

3. Caveat: Of course, this calculation excludes the carbon footprint for also traveling to Indonesia, South Korea and Indonesia as part of this Grand Tour, as well as any other activity while in those places. Plus vehicles and other forms of travel.

If we figured in all the travel, it would well be higher.

The message? Travel lightly but carry a big hockey stick.

4. If Obama wanted to offset the carbon using the tool of choice of his buddy, Al Gore, the Chicago Climate Exchange, he could do so pretty cheaply since carbon offsets there are selling for five cents per metric ton.

So with 8,469 metric tons of CO2 emitted for the Washington-to-Bombay roundtrip, he could buy a carbon indulgence for a mere $423.45. That’s chump change when you are blowing a cool $200 million per day to keep everybody traveling in style.

The Absolute Limit: US Military to Install Bomb-proof, Air-conditioned, Over Ground Tunnel For Obama in India

Sheesh – I want the American president to be safe as much as the next guy, but do ya think this might just be going over the top? Like maybe if the security precautions need to be THIS extensive and expensive, this boondoggle to India might not be such a good idea after all? (Especially since the Indians are leaking them like a sieve and gently mocking us …)

(DNA India) — It could give a sense of superior American organisation, or be an indicator of a deep-set persecution complex. It could also be a manifestation of Uncle Sam’s penchant for a show of strength.

The matter pertains to US president Barack Obama’s planned visit to Mani Bhavan —the Gandhi museum — on November 6, soon after he reaches Mumbai. On Monday, US secret agents visited the museum to plan Obama’s security detail.

They were accompanied by officers of Mumbai Police and civic officials of the D ward (where Mani Bhavan is located). While inspecting the route and the buildings lining up the route to the museum, the Americans detected a skyscraper near Peddar road and also found the area to be highly populated. Since it is difficult to monitor such a congested area, they came up with a quick solution which left the Indians accompanying them amazed: A bomb-proof over-ground tunnel — to be installed by US military engineers in just an hour.

The tunnel would be a kilometre long and measure 12ft by 12ft — enough to let Obama’s cavalcade pass through. The tunnel would be centrally air-conditioned, fitted with close-circuit television cameras, and will be heavily guarded at every point, including, of course, its entry and exit.

Details about when exactly the tunnel would be made were not forthcoming. But officials said that the structure would be dismantled immediately after Obama leaves the area.

Holy shit, you'd think he was God.

It makes sense. He is too cheap to hire a good attorney to do his Wills and Trusts documents, so he figured he would give away the money in vivo. It's a nice thing: nice that he cares so much about others that he is willing to give away all of his money! Such a mensch.

What? It's not His money, you say? RACIST!

Is that large enough for FLOTUS' caboose to pass through?
What, no golf course in there? POTUS needs recreation.

Its an obscene use of tax money.

During the goddamned war Roosevelt hitched rides on army bombers and navy cruisers.
