My youngest daughter just decided to learn accoustical guitar and my 'fake books' are long gone through a dozen changes of location over the years.

A 'fake book' is written music with the chord name placed above the single note melody line to assist those who find reading music difficult.

I am guessing she would prefer songs of the 80's & 90's, but to my amazement, she also has a love for music that goes back to the Big Band days of the 30's & 40's.

Much appreciated...

It isn't a matter of difficulty in reading music Ami, at least not for me. I played piano in bar and lounges in New Orleans during my graduate days and got requests for the 30s and 40s, literally thousands of songs. Can't have sheet music for all that but a "fake book" ... oh yes .. that's the answer for the left hand with a one finger melody maybe chorded too.

Gordon Jenkens was my model and hero. I know somebody who may be able to help but he in Hawaii fro the next few weeks. He's guitar, one of the best.

You see I'm even older than you. But go to www.lyricschord.com/ anyway

Hello, Loring, and thank you. I envy your ability and experiences; I always wanted to do just that in a small jazz lounge somewhere, but never acquired the skill and the talent was lacking.

Radio DJing was perhaps a poor substitute, but I bet you I played more songs than you did!;)

Perhaps I will give Ebay a shot or just search online, I suspect the books are still available somewhere...

all the best!

While absolutely no help to your search, your thread brought up the memory of my dad's fake book. He was an organist who loved the big band era the most.

When he stopped playing he passed on to me, I play bass and keyboards, his fake book. I was amazed - it was a worn, red leather zippered case with thousands of songs from the thirties and forties hole punched into it. It was clearly a hand made job, but the reproduction quality made it look very professional. He never would tell me where he got it in the first place.

Sadly, it was ruined with all my other sheet music from a water leak during storage before a move. While insurance covered costs, the book was irreplaceable.

I haven't thought of that book in years until your post. Thanks for the memories and good luck getting a book for your daughter - it is a truly wonderful thing to have.

Our local music store has a bazillion of them. I'd say to look wherever it is you would have the guitar serviced or where you'd buy strings and picks and whatever.

Amazon has a ton of them...

My friend plays piano from a fake book. She doesn't read music well, but if you give her the chords she can improvise an accompaniment to anything.

It wasn't so much skill Ami, it was more a matter of style ... a talented mom and another patient farm lady, both of whom taught me a style. A sort of combination between rhythm Piano and stride piano with a heavy roll over left hand.

Boogie Woogie was and is my favorite to this day.

Favoritegoddess has a couple of good ideas about where to get some better and more info on 'fake books'; give her ideas a try.

Chordie.com

Tons of music with chords and lyrics. Ability to transpose music chords. Selectable tuning.

I have lots of fake books, but rarely use them anymore. Just grab the songs I want and put them in a 3-ring binder.
