In the thread on homophobia, someone stated that homophobia was a misappropriated term for what was going on, that what it defined as being did not cover all the bases. Well, let's look at that and ferret out appropriate words for all the fears, hates and affinities out there. Feel free to add more to the list if you can think of any.

A political phobia is a fear which goes beyond rational debate and ultimately colours each judgment of fellow citizen and policy. If the phobia is a symptom of experience, it then might be classified as a medical phobia. For example, if a person, as a child, experienced sexual abuse from the same gender and exhibits a phobia which goes beyond the political or public realm into the private realm, then it would be considered something that would need medical attention.

Alerophobia: fear of the other wing (Fr. 'aile' = 'wing')
Agrophobia: fear of the rural
Anarchophobia: fear of anarchy
Archophobia: fear of power, having power or maintaining order
Artemophobia: fear of masculine women (Artemis, goddess of hunting)

Machinephobia: fear of guns and implements of war
Machyphobia: fear of siege
Metaphobia: fear of change
Nymphophobia: fear of female orgasm
Orgophobia: fear of anger
Pakiphobia: fear of Pakistanis
Panophobia: fear of male orgasm
Pederastophobia: fear of pederasts
Pedophilophobia: fear of pedophiles
Phtokophilia: fear of poverty
Plutophobia: fear of wealth
Politiphobia: fear of the urban
Sapphobia: fear of lesbians
Sikhophobia: fear of Sikhs
Sinophobia: fear of Chinese, Chinese power
Sociophobia: fear of people
Tyrannophobia: fear of tyranny
Xenophobia: fear of the outsider

A political misos, or misos, is a hate or loathing towards something. A misos is usually political because of how it manifests itself in the choices people make. A hate of bees might make one a NIMBY of beekeepers, for example. Misos as a medical condition is slowly beginning to be accepted as a diagnosis - for what and for how severe it recognises it is another discussion by the psychiatric nosologists.

Metamise: changing hate
Misalery: hate of the other wing
Misandry: hate of men
Misanthropy: hate of mankind
Misarchy: hate of power
Misergy: hate of work
Misogyny: hate of women
Misophally: hate of the phallus

A political philia is an affinity that colours something positively that alters their judgment towards other citizens and policy. A medical philia

Agrophilia: affinity for the rural
Alerophilia: affinity for taking a wing (Fr. 'aile' = 'wing')
Anagoraphilia: affinity for not entering the agora or political realm.

I disagree that homophobia is a "fear of come-ons", as it would make the only danger person to person and not cover the evils the gays pose to society.

The danger of being forced to confront ones own irrational prejudices.

The fear is that if they become common place, you'll have to deal with a lot more come-ons. Ultimately, it is a lot of fears going on - chronophobia, politophobia, xenophobia and machyphobia.

Don't forget Hydrophobia: Fear of testing the political waters. :p

Stellaphobia

Stellaphobia - fear of the consequences of posting a political thread.? :)

The true source of homophobia is not so much the fear of come-ons, as it is a fear as being recognized as "one of them" and discovering while the same sex is attractive, they don't find you the least attractive.

It's back to the "you're a homophobe, you're secretly gay" thing. Homophobia isn't a fear of turning gay, it's a fear of what that mysterious force can do to the institutions and structures we've grown accustomed too. People feared hippies for the same reason they feared gays. Each had a mystical, interesting, oddly sexual power that was repugnant and still somewhat attractive to Paul and Pam watching TV in Omaha.

Ah, demagoguery. ;)
No-- demagoguery is a political tactic-- stupidophilia and ignorantophilia are the personal reactions of actual people that, I suppose, make demagoguery so effective.

LaRocha, you are probably right-- I am sure that some people do fear political consequences more than sex. Maybe even a significant minority...

Acrophobia, of course, and agoraphobia. I suffer from ophidiophobia.

My kleptophobia and tyrannophobia arises from my experience of closet dictators posing as world savers. Advocates of government solutions to every problem ever known to mankind invoke a learned involuntary and reflexive grab for my wallet.

We were talking more about the fear of men who make a grab for your dick.

Which do you fear most, Try, an attempt upon your manhood, or an attempt upon your moneyclip?

If you really want to defend yourself from moneygrabbers, you need to develop a corporatophobia or three.

I feel it is more of a phobic reaction than a philic reaction - it is out of fear more than an affinity. The affinity is a manifestation, a by-product of the phobia. I have athenophobia on the list.

So Atëphilia?
