Nothing but jazz...

Hot Damm

Madeleine herself has said she's tired of being compared to Billie Holiday, but I guess that comes with the territory when you mimic someone else's style. She obviously has talent, but she needs to find her own voice if she wants to rise above the comparisons.

Cassandra Wilson is the real deal. I can't think of another modern-day female jazz vocalist who can touch her in terms of depth, originality and overall gravitas.

An up-and-comer to watch (if you can call someone who's been performing since the early 60s an "up-and-comer") is Bettye LaVette. She's really more of a soul singer than a jazz singer, but if you like Cassandra, you'll probably dig Bettye. Her performance at the Kennedy Center Honors in 2008 turned a lot of heads - she sang the shit out of "Love Reign O'er Me" in tribute to Pete Townshend and Roger Daltry of the Who, who were in the audience and were visibly moved. Townshend later said she brought nuances of meaning to the song that he never knew were there. Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJi6maTueSc

That's how you interpret a song. It gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.

Damm Stream . . . goosebumps sure 'nuff

That's why I love jazz. The reflective re-interpretation; new truths, a fresh perspective and something found that was never there before.

I've started a jazz blog and I'm going to add Betty

Satie: Gymnopedies Gnossiennes

Good call. I have that CD, but haven't listened to it in a while. Thanks for the reminder. Most modern-day interpretations of Satie are a bit too new-agey for me, but Loussier has some real jazz chops.

Ditto that.

I can't tell you how many times I've purchased this CD for friends and family. Always a big hit. My copy is shelfed next to Miles Davis' Kind of Blue

Enjoy... Ace

Ace,

I was listening to Diana and then I thought of Astrud Gilberto, so I looked her up and saw that Astrud also sings "Gentle Rain." Of course, I thought of Tony Bennett

How you enjoy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJGqzudEDDE

P.s., not a big fan Diana Krall. However, really enjoyed "Just The Way You Are"

Terence Blanchard

Along the river and among young lions, Terrance splayed open his soul. It was the sound of God’s laughter.

The Detroit International Jazz Festival is in full swing. Terence Blanchard music must be heard to be believed. His music articulates compassion, concern and generosity. It touched my soul and made it whole.

Terence and his young band played to the throngs of Detroit tonight and wowed them with pieces from CDs Choices and A Tale Of God's Will (A Requiem for Katrina).

Terence Blanchard

You should have been there . . .

Great offering, Jib ... Thanks for visiting, and come back often...

As an old trumpet player... this one was my inspiration, and I had the opportunity to MC a USO show that he did in England. Great memories.....

Very light, lots of depth and the drummer, vibraphone and the flute are just kicking.

I am digging Chet and Paul. Fabulous recording

Lovely

Mehldau is incredible. I've seen him live in several different settings: solo, trio, and in a quartet with Pat Metheny. He recorded a song with Metheny called Make Peace that just blows me away. Achingly beautiful stuff.

A great tune. Yes, I really enjoy the collaboration between Matheny and Mehldau.

Here's a little something from Bill Evans: Peace Piece

Sometimes

Sometimes you enjoy the quiet. Sometime you want something tender and slow. And sometimes, you're In a Sentimental Mood

Duke Ellington and John Coltrane. Hope you enjoy
