Venus as Fashion Maven

Does anyone else agree that, for the good of her bank account, Venus Williams (and sister, Serena, as well) should separate her pretensions of being a fashion designer from her professional tennis outings?

It's been painful (for me, at least) to watch her (not quite as bad with her outfit of the--literally--minute, as she competes with Clejsters for a spot in the U.S. Open Tennis women's final) try to play tennis in the ridiculous (ridiculous for a tennis player) court fashions she shows up in. She's been losing concentration and maneuverability on her tennis and pulling at unmentionable places to get redressed between points almost as often as Nadal picks at his butt during a match.

The top photo was one of her worst, yes--because when she really moved on a point, the sequined part ended up bunched up around her waist. And when it was pulled down, she didn't have mobility in her thighs.

The one she's wearing at the moment isn't so bad, except that it has spaghetti straps she has to adjust from time to time.

Well, she is winning lots of attention...which I know shouldn't be the point, but just about every article on her mentions her skimpy outfits.

I can't imagine she's selling such outfits as they're not only (as you say) demonstrably problematic for playing tennis in (you'd think she'd know what would be best to play tennis in, at least), but ugly. Talk about a double wammy.

But they are keeping her name and image in the news.

Venus' dark black outfit densely covered in very bright "sparkly" sequins was way, way "over the top" and crossed the line into flat-out bad sportsmanship.


That dress had to be immensely distracting to any opponent. I believe that she intentionally designed it to be that way.


The ATP or the USTA or an individual match referee should have told her the dress was impermissible.


She's not the only offender. Nadal's flourescent yellow shirt ( worn earlier in the tournament ) was another example of what I believe was a blatant and intentional effort to distract an opponent.


The only way to end this bad sportsmanship and bad taste is to revert to a policy that should never have changed in the first place ( and what only Wimbledon currently enforces ): white clothing only.


I despise John McEnroe for the horrible behavior he always displayed throughout his career. It was rude, childish and boorish. I blame him for setting an example of bad sportsmanship that has, unfortunately, been emulated by far too many who followed him in the sport. The jerk has never grown up; I saw him just last year ( at age 50, for god's sake ) stage a temper-tantrum that was indistinguishable from a 2-year old.

I'm the wrong person to ask about fashion in any way. When I ride I wear Jeans, Boots, a T-Shirt and Leathers along with a helmet.

When it's cold out I wear Jeans and a Chambray Shirt as well as Boots.

All other times it's Shorts, Sport Shirts and Sandals.

(This of course doesn't count weather related clothing like Rain Jackets or colder weather jackets.)

Oh and I wear either a Do_Rag or a Cap.

Ah, yes, but what I was dinging her for was wearing clothes that impede either her movement or her mental focus (you can't think about tennis much when you have to pull your pants out of your crack every three minutes in front of millions of people) when she's trying to earn those big bucks playing tennis. The headscratcher is that she is a professional tennis player; you'd think she could design clothes for tennis players better than Vera Wang could (and does). But neither she nor Serena do.
