Or, maybe that's a bad idea?

"Are we going to let Witches and Fortune Tellers remain tax free?"

That's what Romanian senators may have been fearing when they rejected a proposal to tax witches and fortune tellers.

Romania is in a severe economic downturn and is trying to raise revenue from taxes. The government hiked sales tax from 19 to 24 percent, and slashed public sector wages by one-fourth.

Sales tax of 24%? OMG!:eek::eek::eek::eek:

Don't see any reason for them to remain tax free. But then, I don't think churches should be able to operate tax free either. Imagine how quickly our budget would shrink if we taxed churches.

Given how many churches live in a state of constant budget crisis, probably a lot slower than if we just raised everyone's tax rate 1%. After all, about 40%, if my memory serves me, of all Americans pay no income taxes, at all.

That's those tax and spend Romanians for you.

THey haven't figured out how to work capitalism yet. :eek:

I don't know why churches get off tax-scott-free, either. But I don't think taxing them would yield much revenue.

Freedom of religion. If you can tax a church, you can arrange the tax laws so that a specific religion can't afford to operate.

If the Witches & Fortune Tellers were that good, there's be no financial problem in the first place.
