Police trying to figure out if race played role in attacks

The area around the Iowa State Fairgrounds has been the scene of several fights over the past 10 days, according to Des Moines Police. They say dozens of African-American teens may have targeted white fairgoers.

Police say in the latest attack on the fair's final night, Sunday, 30 to 40 teens roamed the fairgrounds looking for trouble. They say some teens had been yelling, "It's beat whitey night."

Police cited at least three teens for failing to disperse the area. Police spokeswoman Lori Lavarato said officers are still trying to figure out what role, if any, race had in the incidents. She said, "We had a lot of assaults on people randomly walking out of the Iowa State Fair. Most of our victims happen to be white. Is that a racial thing? I don't know. It's all under investigation."

NEW ORLEANS — In the days after Hurricane Katrina left much of New Orleans in flooded ruins, the city was awash in tales of violence and bloodshed.

The narrative of those early, chaotic days — built largely on half-baked anecdote and unfounded rumor — quickly hardened into a kind of ugly consensus: Poor blacks and looters were murdering innocent victims and terrorizing whoever crossed their path in the unprotected city.

"As you look back on it, at the time it was being reported, it looked like the city was under siege," said Russel Honore, the retired Army lieutenant general who led military relief efforts after the storm.

Today, a clearer picture is emerging, and it is an equally ugly one, including white vigilante violence, police killings, official cover-ups and a suffering population far more brutalized than many were willing to believe. Several police officers and a white civilian accused of racially motivated violence have recently been indicted in various cases, and more incidents are coming to light as the Justice Department is investigating civil rights violations after the storm.
