I've never gotten an answer, though - is there some sort of program that'll pay you per post on a message board? And is creating multiple user names part of the scam?

Well, when I was running a message board, there is a place where people would go and try to find a way to drive more traffic. It ranges from everything from contests, SEO, content management, user management, and the usual stuff to get a community going. That is the legitimate way.

There are grey/black tactics to drive traffic such as spamming, and yes, paid posting. The downsides to those are, the spam will most likely be against the TOS of the hosting provider, and will have your account terminated. The paid posting is usually not against server TOS, but is a shitty way to make it appear there are more users. I have never used them, but have seen it advertised.
