Another reason why BDSM will never gain acceptance in the US

Fine. Be pissed. I was nitpicking, but there a purpose behind it. Taking a word in context renders the experience subjective, and thus breaks down the commonality necessary for good dialog.

I'm not pissed, I'm arguing. If you can't argue without being pissed, then you shouldn't be argumentative.

Number one lit rule for gracie: when you get pissed it's time to take a break.

Exactly! The word has changed meaning twice (so that's three separate meanings) in my own lifetime. One of my favourite lines that illustrates this is from one of the C.S. Lewis Narnia books:

"Edmund was suddenly gay."

Reading that today, I could take that to mean he was suddenly happy, suddenly sucked, or suddenly sucked cock. :)
It couldn't suck that he was suddenly happy to suck cock?!
Sure. But we're not writing essays here, we're holding a disconnected discussion. In English. In a non-contextual form. Now if we start talking statistics or science, then we will need a tighter definition of theory.

By the way, when you claim science doesn't prove anything, do you count mathematics as a science? (In mathematics, you don't use science to proove anything, you use latin.)
I'm saying that empirical science works by going against the null hypothesis. You aim to "disprove that".
As for you crazies in math-math's just gay. It follows its own rules. And the latin's just the fancy dress, not the means (right?)

This is after all, a porn forum.

It's ALL subjective, or else why would it be here?

Not if he was gay. Suddenly.

Scientific method, yep.

Well, that's your theory...

Not if he was gay. Suddenly.

Well, the suddeness of it all could make it suck. I mean, it'd be a momentous change, and the discrepancy could be perceived as being sucky.

Well, that's your theory...
Nah, I'd say it's my hypothesis.

Now, will BDSM find large scale acceptance in the US? Is Marilyn Manson the face of BDSM? Dita von Teese? Whoever the one preacher was that condemned homosexuality and paid for gay hooker?

Lady Gaga?

I'd hope she'd be the ass.

Seriously, though: what would widespread acceptance of BDSM look like?
Bring your slave to work day?
I thought BDSM in its breadth was a niche of "sexuality"..and wouldn't sexuality have to become more uninhibited in the US before anything else could happen?

SHOULD BDSM gain widespread acceptance?

personally, I don't care if it does. I'm glad that there is enough acceptance that I can find partners easily, thank you internets, and I can find how-tos on Shibari which were sort of top-secret when I was younger (also thank you internets).

And the bars don't get shut down for activities.

Other than that, how much acceptance do I need?

What is sexuality like in Romania, relative to your perception of sexuality in the US?

How widespread is the practice of cultural BDSM? How widespread is just plain power and pain in sex?

Yeah, that. I don't need a rom-com made about it to make me feel accepted.

Yours is a great rule.

I know. :D

I don't know what rom-com means, but I honestly don't care if bdsm ever becomes 'acceptable' in the use. I don't care if it doesn't. Either way, I'll still be in the closet because no one in my family cares what the rest of the world thinks, and it's not something I'll ever be able to tell them. I don't give a damn what the rest of the world thinks of me.

Pfft. Just because something is "accepted" doesn't mean it's expected to have it thrown in everyone's faces.

"Accepted" means (to me) that "they do it, they don't bother us, it's okay". That's all we need.

I can't speak for the US though.

That senor, is a great question. No clue.
Communism was all about repressing stuff like that.
Post communism has seen a relative explosion of overt sexuality (skimpy outfits, porn in newspapers and on TV)...but, I honestly have no clue.

I honestly have no cogent answer: the neighbors I could spy on had no sex :D

I know. :D

Romantic Comedy.

I think it would be great if couples didn't have to choose between seeking medical attention for the bottom, and risking incarceration for the Top, if the bottom's showing signs of SM.

Also, I think it would be great if kinky practitioners didn't have to risk losing a job, or custody of their children, if outed for their sexual preference.

Graceanne - thanks for asking what rom-com meant!
Teknight - I don't recall laughing during Secretary. Mostly I just thought it sucked.

You have some very good points there.
