Hi

I'm relatively new on the SRP forum, dabbled once or twice in the past with mixed enjoyment. Having just tried again and really enjoyed a thread with a very talented roleplayer I was looking for more threads to join.

I have some questions though. Although I'm new here, I've been quite active on literotica's interactive story site for a few years. This differs slightly to the SRP in that writers take turns adding pieces of the entire story rather than just one character.

The question of what gender the writer is never really comes up in interactive stories, both men and women write the actions and sex scenes of everbody involved. Here on the SRP I see a lot of threads saying things like "wanted 1M 2F" is it not the done thing here for a writer to roleplay characters of the opposite sex?

Hi there..

Good question and welcome to the forum and I hope you give the roleplay here a try.

Two points I can address for you from my own personal experience would be about the gender of the characters played and the issue of writing one anthers words and actions.

I personally only write with males playing the male role as it's what I'm more comfortable with and I find given the context of the 'S' in srp, its just easier for me to reply to a male writer rather than a female writer. I can somewhat contradict myself, in being able to write the male in a rp if I felt inclined, though not on Lit yet, but I've done so with great success many times in the past.

On the matter of writing the actions and words of other characters in srp, that's not something I do nor tolerate in my own srps. It's 'godmodding' and against the rules of many sites but not enforced here to my understanding, if consent is given between playing partners. I don't like it, as I see role play as an individual 'role' to 'play' by each partner , with each character under the full control of its creator.

I hope my view helps and explains in part my view.

Hi Android and welcome to the SRP forums. I know a few people who have played the opposite sex in their stories. So no, it is not limited to playing your own genre here on the SRP forums. In my opinion the '1M, 2F etc' is what the person is looking for in the character, as in, they are looking for 1 male character and 2 female characters to be filled.

But I also know that there are people who are not comfortable with cross-gender playing. I personally see nothing wrong with it, but others think differently. In all honesty, the people here are lovely. If you have any queries in such matters, just write a PM to the person who advertised the thread. Don't be afraid to ask questions, the people here don't bite...well...they do bite but only when they are feeling playful ;). When you start a thread announce your intention to play the opposite sex if that is what you are wishing to do. I am not a seasoned SRP'er, but that is how I would approach the situation anyway.

Yes, this is also another big point to make. Nicely done Alana :). Some people are a little more flexible with such things, while other are dead against it. It all comes down to personal preferences. What I would suggest is that you read a few stories here and in your mind start a little list of writers whom you would love to write with. You will get an understanding of how they treat such matters from their posts, and you will also be able to assess if your writing ability would suit theirs. Once you are comfortable within the forums I would then write them a friendly PM introducing yourself, how and why you liked their previous stories and perhaps an idea. You have nothing to lose :) But like I said, ask questions if in doubt.

Once again, welcome! And I hope you enjoy your time here.

Thanks for your replies. So far I've limited myself to male characters, but had noticed one or two threads that interested me and were crying out for more female characters, but was unsure whether to broach the subject on their OOC threads.

I like roleplays with plot and storylines, and was a little confused as how you manage to move a plot onwards if you cannot predict the reactions of everyone else in the scene.

In the one thread I've played out it was relatively simple with only one other character in the scene and PM's outside the thread with the writer could establish how we both wanted to proceed before either of us posted. Is that the usual way to progress or is that too difficult if there's more characters involved?

The other lovely ladies pretty much covered it but I thought I would add....I know people who play both genders, some for writing exercises some just for the fun. Its a personal thing and I think comes down to what you are comfortable writing and interacting as and what your srp partner is looking for.

It's funny cause I was having a conversation like this just the other day with one of my co-writers. Whereas most people hate 'god-modding' and prefer to be able to decide all their character's responses and actions, this guy actually enjoys the fluidity of both writers throwing in their own scenes and bits of dialogue. I do think this is partly because he writes dominant male characters and playing opposite sub female characters all the time means he is constantly forced to drive the plot when he'd prefer more of an equal division. He also likes to have the polt twist unexpectedly on him and to be thrown curveballs that he probably doesn't get as often when his character is almost always the one in control. But I'm digressing into kink now.

Basically, the general practice here is for people to control their own characters and not overstep that boundary. There are loads of people here who write characters of either gender. As for rules though, aside from Lit's term of service, the 'rules' are whatever you agree with whoever you're writing with. There's nothing to stop you advertising for co-writers who are happy for the ground rules to be a little different.

Android, all of the ladies here hit the nail on the head. PM those who have threads, ask them about them, be respectful (I swear to you, that in many cases this will go a long way for you) and get to know the people on the boards, that helps too.

Also, see the SRP Profile link at the bottom of my sig? You'll see others here, with the same thing. Go read the others, then create your own. Not only will you find that it's a good exercise for what you wish to learn and write, but you can find other SRP profiles that interest you, and PM those folks and before you know it, you'll have several threads up and running!

Welcome, and I hope you enjoy your time here!

as others stated whether playing the other gender is acceptable depends on what you and your writing partner tolerate. I know the only times I've played girls here is when I'm juggling multiple characters and one happens to be a girl. I would find it uncomfortable I think to play a lady exclusively, but that's just me.

As for your question concerning plotting, that's where the PM system here comes in. Discuss the next steps in your plot with your co-writer ahead of time. If your partner is worth their salt and most are, they'll be happy to steer their posts to your agreed upon direction. I live by plotting and collaboration, I'm not so good if I have to write by the seat of my pants though I have one partner who prefers RPing spontaneously that way and I do my best to rise to the occassion for her.

For group threads the general rule is to create an out of character or OOC thread to serve the same purpose as the PMs would in a one on one thread. It's pretty much stating your idea for the direction of the plot and your group thread partners try to steer things in their posts.

The point I'm trying to make here is that it all depends on how much you follow the three C's of RPing: Communicate, Collaborate, Cooperate.
