This is a place where you can share your favorite poems and songs with all of lit! :D

Heres a great combo. If any of you like rap music, then this is the best rapper our there! I have pretty high standards. (It better be about more than weed and pussy.) Or, conversely, if you despise rap. (Understandable given the state of the mainstream.) Just forget this is a song. Because, when push comes to shove, it has far more poem in it than hip hop...

it was a purple purple sky in an orange orange room
and everyone was whistlen the same damn tune
except bryan, bryan starred out across the field
and watched the horizon blossum the copper feel
over the edge of the world the one they're all afriad to walk
ration out for why their so high on the small talk
but bryan knows where the crows all go
to find the ifs and the ands and the buts and all sos

if i can run through the woods and speed like the light
i'd find the answers to why and be back by tonight
if i could fly through the fog and look at this rock
i'd figure out how to keep hell off of my block
but as it stands i stay content
tryin to be the magic man and pay my rent
and wishin that bryan would turn me on
to the secrets he sought
while we keep burnin the dawn just to keep the day hot

if i could ask you one question id ask where you went
you could teach me a lesson everytime i got bent
but the alcohol dont make me forget about it all
doesnt matter the season the leaves can still fall
they slipt hidden messages within the cards that were delt
i understand myself and all the sorrow i felt
for as simple as i am how'd it get so complex
got me studyin the margins and disregardin the text

i open the curtins and listen to the traffic go
but i still get nervous each time a piece passes go
the resado is thick and the memory fails
i still laugh because the path feels alot like a trail

if i can run through the woods and speed like the light
i'd find the answers to why and be back by tonight
if i could fly through the fog and look at this rock
i'd figure out how to keep hell off of my block
but as it stands i stay content
tryin to be the magic man and pay my rent
and wishin that bryan would turn me on
to the secrets he sought
while we keep burnin the dawn just to keep the day hot

we used to be a couple of pimps walking the hallways with pride
drunk or sober life was nothin short a roller coaster ride
trips to the clubs now lets go to the rythm
all we wanted out of life was what was given

and when you passed i wanted to take back the time we wasted
id trade all the buzzes in for one more conversation
we could sit in the shade and discuss the meaning of sacred
cuz i cant see the garden no more just the avons?
but the wind still blows
and the plants still grow
and i wish your name was on the guest list at my shows
i gotta believe that you can see me run out of my freedom
cuz you got to meet the sun before you got to meet my son

and when i see lightning feels like my buzz hightning
everytime i feel the sun i can smell the love
adn when i smell the air i can hear a child trying
but everytime i hear a river i i think the mother crying

and when i see lightning feels like my buzz hightning
everytime i feel the sun i can smell the love
adn when i smell the air i can hear a child trying
but everytime i hear a river i i think the mother crying

everytime i think of you i know your laughter
and when i hear of you i know your laughter

I love linking music to people who don't want to hear it. No, really.

Due to the confusion over metal and its subgenres, I'll do my best to provide a few examples. Mainly for just the stuff I listen to though.

Traditional Heavy Metal: Heavy metal is characterized by loud distorted guitars, emphatic rhythms, dense bass-and-drum sound, and vigorous vocals.

Example: Metallica - Unforgiven II

Avant-garde metal: A cross-genre term used to describe metal bands that exhibit experimentation through non-standard sounds, instruments, and song structures akin to the genre of metal they are rooted in.

Example: Arcturus - Shipwrecked Frontier Pioneer

The New Wave of British Heavy Metal (frequently abbreviated as NWOBHM) was a heavy metal movement that started in the late 1970s, in Britain, and achieved international attention by the early 1980s. Sometimes compared to Beatlemania, the era developed as a reaction in part to the decline of early heavy metal bands such as Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. NWOBHM bands toned down the blues influences of earlier acts, incorporated elements of punk, increased the tempo, and adopted a "tougher" sound, taking a harder approach to its music.

Example: Iron Maiden - Run to the Hills

Melodic Death Metal: Melodic death metal, sometimes referred to as "melodeath", is heavy metal music mixed with some death metal elements, such as growled vocals and the liberal use of blastbeats. Songs are typically based on Iron Maiden-esque guitar harmonies and melodies with typically higher-pitched growls, as opposed to traditional death metal's brutal riffs and much lower death grunts.

Example: Dark Tranquillity - Icipher
Scar Symmetry - Ghost Prototype II - Deus Ex Machina

Folk metal: As the name suggests, the genre is a fusion of heavy metal with folk music. This includes the widespread use of folk instruments and, to a lesser extent, traditional singing styles.

Example: Moonsorrow - Kivenkantaja

Gothic Metal: Gothic metal is characterised as a combination of the dark melancholy of gothic rock with the aggression and sonic power of highly amplified heavy metal music.

Example: Sirenia - The Seventh Summer
Within Temptation - The Howling

Nu-Metal: Nu metal is a subgenre that blends heavy metal elements with other styles, including hip hop and industrial rock. Some nu metal bands use seven-string guitars, which are sometimes down-tuned to increase heaviness, resulting in bass guitarists using five and six-string instruments. Generally metal fans don't like to be associated with this genre.

Example: Korn - Freak on a Leash
Slipknot - Duality

Power metal: Power metal is more upbeat than most metal genres, taking heavy influence from heavy metal and speed metal. Power metal often emphasizes clean, melodic, high-pitched vocals, fast pacing that is mostly driven by double bass drumming and melodic lead guitar. The rhythm guitar is defined by straight power chord progressions. Power metal leans toward the positive, happy side of life, seeking to empower the listener and inspire joy and courage. Power metal lyrics usually involve fantasy or science fiction themes.

Example: Gamma Ray - Lust For Life
Edguy - Tears of a Mandrake

Progressive metal is a fusion between progressive rock and heavy metal. It is one of heavy metal's more complex genres, due to its use of unusual and dynamic time signatures, long compositions, complex compositional structures, and skilled instrumental playing, where instrumental solos are detailed and extended. However, the latest age of Progressive Metal has favoured rougher lyrics and lower-pitched riff sequences with high amounts of strumming. Vocals, if present, are melodic (though there are a few that utilise unclean vocals), and lyrics are often philosophical, spiritual, or political.

Example: Pain of Salvation - Idiocracy
Shadow Gallery - With Honor
Ayreon - The First Man on Earth
Dream Theater - Octavarium (If you listen to anything in this post listen to this. If the length concerns you, at least try the last 5 and a half minutes.)

Symphonic metal varies in form. It most commonly refers to heavy metal bands that use orchestral elements in their music. These elements include full orchestras, opera themes, vocals or keyboarding akin to that of opera or symphony music, and a softer and more upbeat nature than other metal genres.

Example: Epica - Unleashed
Nightwish - Ghost Love Score
Rhapsody of Fire - Emerald Sword

Thrash metal is often regarded as the first form of extreme metal. It is generally characterised by its fast tempos, complexity and aggression. Thrash metal guitar playing is most notable for the "chugging" sound it creates through low-pitched palm muted riffs, and high-pitched shred guitar solos. Drummers often use double-kick and double-bass drumming. Vocals are most often shouted or sung in an aggressive manner.

Example: Slayer - Raining Blood

Viking metal is a subgenre of heavy metal music characterised by its galloping pace, keyboard-rich anthemic sound, bleakness and dramatic emphasis on Norse mythology, Norse paganism, and the Viking Age. The genre of Viking metal was pioneered by the Swedish band Bathory, who took some of their inspiration and musical style from American heavy metal band Manowar. An epic sound is "a prerequisite for inclusion under the Viking metal banner" and bands in the genre typically adopt a "bombastic, keyboard laden" approach. Viking metal acts are known to be different with influences from death metal, black metal and some power metal.

Example: Ensiferum - Wanderer

Mixed subgenres-

Opeth's style is firmly rooted in Scandinavian death metal, Opeth has consistently incorporated progressive music, folk, blues rock and jazz influences into their usually-lengthy compositions. Many compositions include acoustic guitar interludes and strong dynamic shifts, as well as both growling and clean vocals. They're usually classified as Progressive Death Metal.

Opeth - Ghost of Perdition

Symphonic Black Metal: Example - Dimmu Borgir - Progenies of the Great Apocalypse

That's all I got for now. I may add more later, but I'm getting a bit tired of making links.

A True Account of Talking to the Sun at Fire Island
by Frank O'Hara

The Sun woke me this morning loud
and clear, saying "Hey! I've been
trying to wake you up for fifteen
minutes. Don't be so rude, you are
only the second poet I've ever chosen
to speak to personally

so why
aren't you more attentive? If I could
burn you through the window I would
to wake you up. I can't hang around
here all day."

"Sorry, Sun, I stayed
up late last night talking to Hal."

"When I woke up Mayakovsky he was
a lot more prompt" the Sun said
petulantly. "Most people are up
already waiting to see if I'm going
to put in an appearance."

I tried
to apologize "I missed you yesterday."
"That's better" he said. "I didn't
know you'd come out." "You may be
wondering why I've come so close?"
"Yes" I said beginning to feel hot
wondering if maybe he wasn't burning me
anyway.

"Frankly I wanted to tell you
I like your poetry. I see a lot
on my rounds and you're okay. You may
not be the greatest thing on earth, but
you're different. Now, I've heard some
say you're crazy, they being excessively
calm themselves to my mind, and other
crazy poets think that you're a boring
reactionary. Not me.

Just keep on
like I do and pay no attention. You'll
find that people always will complain
about the atmosphere, either too hot
or too cold too bright or too dark, days
too short or too long.

If you don't appear
at all one day they think you're lazy
or dead. Just keep right on, I like it.

And don't worry about your lineage
poetic or natural. The Sun shines on
the jungle, you know, on the tundra
the sea, the ghetto. Wherever you were
I knew it and saw you moving. I was waiting
for you to get to work.

And now that you
are making your own days, so to speak,
even if no one reads you but me
you won't be depressed. Not
everyone can look up, even at me. It
hurts their eyes."
"Oh Sun, I'm so grateful to you!"

"Thanks and remember I'm watching. It's
easier for me to speak to you out
here. I don't have to slide down
between buildings to get your ear.
I know you love Manhattan, but
you ought to look up more often.

And
always embrace things, people earth
sky stars, as I do, freely and with
the appropriate sense of space. That
is your inclination, known in the heavens
and you should follow it to hell, if
necessary, which I doubt.

Maybe we'll
speak again in Africa, of which I too
am specially fond. Go back to sleep now
Frank, and I may leave a tiny poem
in that brain of yours as my farewell."

"Sun, don't go!" I was awake
at last. "No, go I must, they're calling
me."
"Who are they?"

Rising he said "Some
day you'll know. They're calling to you
too." Darkly he rose, and then I slept.

No, you didn't Ahren, just no one can compare with the epicness of that post of yours. I took notes btw. Still dislike metal, but appreciate the breakdown.

Alright.. activist.. something that gets me pumped and alert to the world around me, case in point, Flobots... love them.

Listen to this and then this

And yes.. oh hell yes.

The Hollow Men - T. S. Eliot

I

We are the hollow men
We are the stuffed men
Leaning together
Headpiece filled with straw. Alas!
Our dried voices, when
We whisper together
Are quiet and meaningless
As wind in dry grass
Or rats’ feet over broken glass
In our dry cellar

Shape without form, shade without colour,
Paralysed force, gesture without motion;

Those who have crossed
With direct eyes, to death’s other Kingdom
Remember us—if at all—not as lost
Violent souls, but only
As the hollow men
The stuffed men.

II

Eyes I dare not meet in dreams
In death’s dream kingdom
These do not appear:
There, the eyes are
Sunlight on a broken column
There, is a tree swinging
And voices are
In the wind’s singing
More distant and more solemn
Than a fading star.

Let me be no nearer
In death’s dream kingdom
Let me also wear
Such deliberate disguises
Rat’s coat, crowskin, crossed staves
In a field
Behaving as the wind behaves
No nearer—

Not that final meeting
In the twilight kingdom

III

This is the dead land
This is cactus land
Here the stone images
Are raised, here they receive
The supplication of a dead man’s hand
Under the twinkle of a fading star.

Is it like this
In death’s other kingdom
Waking alone
At the hour when we are
Trembling with tenderness
Lips that would kiss
Form prayers to broken stone.

IV

The eyes are not here
There are no eyes here
In this valley of dying stars
In this hollow valley
This broken jaw of our lost kingdoms

In this last of meeting places
We grope together
And avoid speech
Gathered on this beach of the tumid river

Sightless, unless
The eyes reappear
As the perpetual star
Multifoliate rose
Of death’s twilight kingdom
The hope only
Of empty men.

V

Here we go round the prickly pear
Prickly pear prickly pear
Here we go round the prickly pear
At five o’clock in the morning.

Between the idea
And the reality
Between the motion
And the act
Falls the Shadow
For Thine is the Kingdom

Between the conception
And the creation
Between the emotion
And the response
Falls the Shadow
Life is very long

Between the desire
And the spasm
Between the potency
And the existence
Between the essence
And the descent
Falls the Shadow
For Thine is the Kingdom

For Thine is
Life is
For Thine is the

This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper.

Actually that second one isn't bad at all, but I'm really not fond of rap portions. The parts without it are pretty good though. The violinist is talented and cute.

I'd try to recommend stuff based on that but I don't really listen to much with that lyrical style. I'd say these songs contain similar elements, I suppose:

Serenity - Velatum
Dream Theater - Prophets of War

OK. I'm bring country music in here.

Country music, and then two songs I recently found out were written by Shel Silverstein, and then... Bon Jovi :D

Something fast and fun, by my favorite American Idol, one of two seasons I watched. A popular one, amongst the country people, and a favorite of mine. Cowboy Casanova.

And then... Another one I really love, by Miranda Lambert, one of her more violent songs that makes you think "I don't want to piss her off." Or at least, makes me think that.
Gunpowder and Lead

Two songs by the Dixie Chicks that hit me hard. They went through a period of rejection because their lead singer said something bad about George W. Bush at a concert in England. After the whole thing, they created an album full of songs from their experience. One of which is Top of the World and the other, Not Ready to Make Nice.

A funner mood, with a song sung by the late Johnny Cash and written by my all time favorite poet, Shel Silverstein. It's silly and country and all around amazing. A Boy Named Sue.

And, transitioning to another song with the same writer, a song sung by Dr. Hook. Cover of the Rolling Stone.

I actually liked both of those.

Okay.. I went in a different direction.. I was thinking a little jazzy and just cause I love his voice.. here's one more

And now for something completely different.

Well those are metal songs so you don't hate all metal like you think!

Not a jazz fan so no comment there.

The last link is pretty good. Though I have no real suggestions based on that either. Devin Townsend has a few songs that sort of have a cabaret-type tune though, I suppose.

Devin Townsend - Bad Devil

Some unrelated songs I feel like linking:

Nightwish - Meadows of Heaven
Angra - Sprouts of Time

and for something entirely on the other end of the spectrum:

Girls Generation - Run Devil Run (because they are too hot for their own good... Is there even a song here? I can't tell. Too distracted.

All Of Me Is For Your Leisure

This is a song I wrote, I haven't had a chance to smoothe out the wrinkles in it yet and no music comes with it - sorry! I hope everyone likes it  please be kind, it's only the second song I've ever written and I usually stick to poetry for a reason heh.

All of me is for Your leisure

Verse One

The first words to leave your lips
Start to make me drip, drip, drip
Oh baby whenever you’re around?
I can’t control myself, you got me down.

You take your time, I hurry up
The choice is mine but you make it tough
And every sentence is a trick I know
But baby that’s just another place I need to go

When the fire starts to burn and my thighs start to ache,
You start to yearn and make me quake
Cause baby I know I’m a fool for you,
And you exploit it in everything you do!

Chorus

You make me powerless, you make me scream
You make me cum, you make me cream
You know you own just about everything.
My orgasms, my pain and pleasure
All of me is for your leisure.

Verse Two

At your wish, I sink to my knees,
Call me a whore, baby please
You make me weak in all kinds of places,
You send me running different types of races.

A vicious tug on my hair,
Makes me scream, oh how you scare.
You walk around me, swinging that belt.
You make me shiver, you make me melt

Chorus

You make me powerless, you make me scream
You make me cum, you make me cream
You know you own just about everything.
My orgasms, my pain and pleasure
All of me is for your leisure.

Verse Three

I can’t hold you back,
A strangled cry, a little crack
My head just snaps back
I want you to find my centre,
Begging you to please just enter

Fuck me hard
Take me completely
I’m crying please
And begging you sweetly

Chorus

You make me powerless, you make me scream
You make me cum, you make me cream
You know you own just about everything.
My orgasms, my pain and pleasure
All of me is for your leisure.

All of me is for your leisure!

Verse Four

Make me stumble, make me plead…
Cut me up and make me bleed
The choice is yours and I ain’t defiant
You force me to crumble, you make me pliant

Your little fucktoy begs her Master
Please don’t tease
Please go faster!
Fuck me,
Own me,
Make me yours.
Here I am, down on all fours!

Chorus

You make me powerless, you make me scream
You make me cum, you make me cream
You know you own just about everything.
My orgasms, my pain and pleasure
All of me is for your leisure.

All of me is for your leisure!

Oh yeah…your pleasure, all of me is for your leisure baby…

Wow, great contributions, all of you! Truly amazing.

Im gonna bust out another atmosphere song. His poetry is unbelievable...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qX9E5maxMlM

Shrapnel Lyrics, by Slug of atmosphere.

Shrapnel...
I can't remember who asked me, but someone asked me
How long I thought that I would be allowed atop this trash heap
I didn't answer cause I'm tired of criticizing the masses
Inspired the support the devouring of the self
All the power to the people who dig potholes
Placed me in a glass case full of lost treasures and fossils
Got a right to be hostile, my love is gettin' gang raped
By an army full money hungry crocodiles
Quantity is up, market in a flood
But the party over here has never steered through this much love
I'll take the laughter, but I'd rather have the women
Who am I kiddin'? I'll be content with whatever I'm givin'
Work for food, rent, sex, money, or water
I don't know what else that you have to offer
Your first born daughter? No need, already got her
She came to the set hungry and left hot and bothered
My posse's full of women, computer nerds, and thugs
Much to my dismay, I'm none of the above.
Someday I'ma be the mack of the minute
And you were so damn good I'ma have to forget it
Listen to the mimic, it's almost on
Drink, till ya hit me with a tall potion
Think quick, how much more insult
Will it take for me to break your light bulb

Shrapnel...
[Chorus x2]
Shards of pull cards scattered on the carpet
It's hard to breathe cause you wear a fitted target
Tug upon a choke chain, travel the cold rain(?)
Of course I've came to show you shrapnel

[Slug]
Check your mail, climb your ladder
Count the pieces you've managed to gather
Does it matter? What are you trying to achieve?
Let go of your throat if you're dying to breathe
And finally we've begun to make a little progress
Ain't a single dock in this river that can stop us
Lost in the mix like a feeble(?) over dub
Got me screaming at these shippin' till these people know what's up
Yeah Slug's back, but his collection of hub caps
Caught a buzzin' brought a notebook full of love raps
Open the pipes and tuck that voice in
I'ma sit on this corner and nibble on my poison
Baby once in awhile I find a reason to smile
But most the time it's spent deep in denial
It's all make believe, I want the cake to eat
But this lake's too deep, tryin' to stand on two feet
Wonderin' about the thunder runnin' through this blood
I try to keep my cool, but the hat fits too snug
Study the love, took my degree
Shoved it into a bottle, chucked it into the sea

Shrapnel...
[Chorus x2]
Shards of pull cards scattered on the carpet
It's hard to breathe cause you wear a fitted target
Tug upon a choke chain, travel the cold rain
Of course I've came to show you shrapnel

Shrapnel...
[Chorus x4]
Shards of pull cards scattered on the carpet
It's hard to breathe cause you wear a fitted target
Tug upon a choke chain, travel the cold rain
Of course I've came to show you shrapnel

Shrapnel...[repeated to end]

I am not ugly [reversed]

... Mouths the word silently.

wow

*Blushes*

Is that directed at me sweet Oreo?

*Blushes deeper*

I said it was graphic, everyone always hears male singers do these kinds of songs but hardly ever a female singer and they certainly never do every line like that so I mentioned that to Leo and he told me I should do one...so I did...after much convincing lol!

I hope that's a good thing then...although I was hoping for a more vocal review if you can manage it.

I like yours a lot too Wayward! ;)
