Totally random query: Japanese character translation

Can anyone here tell me what is written on this girl's spine?

The first symbol as near I can tell is this, which I believe means luck and is chinese, the second looks to me like this, which aparantly means beautiful (again, chinese) but Im not as sure on that one.

The third is a mystery to me.

Oh anyone could make a mistake like that, the only reason I didnt was because I occasionaly play games in japanese, I dont really understand whats going on when I do, but I still manage to win.

I never saw the characters in question, but a lot of Japanese characters have Chinese basis, usually with similar if not the same meanings.

The first character Kitten linked, has the Chinese meaning for luck (pronounced Ji), it is also the Japanese Kanji for good luck, joy or congratulations (pronounced KICHI, KITSU, or yoshi...).


The second character Kitten linked, although it is Chinese for beauty or beautiful (pronounced 'mei'), it is also the Japanese Kanji with the same meaning (pronounced BI, MI, or utsuku.shii...).

I'm Chinese with a 2 week crash course in minimal Japanese, so I had to google the Japanese pronunciation and stuff.

However, the kanji (Japanese "a japanese way of writing chinese) and Hanja (Korean aka "a korean way of writing chinese) for "lucky" is the same. (吉)

It can also mean "good".

The 2nd letter in kanji (美) does indeed mean beautiful as well.

The third letter in hanja (sorry- just how it looks to me) is hard to see, but it either means 妙 <--- (Wonderful) or 好 (basically meaning "fond of").

I think in the absence of a conclusive translation of the third letter I'm going to go with 'lucky, beautiful & loved.'

I love tattoos. My admiration of them can border on fetishistic but I have never been able to identify a tattoo that I'd want to wear myself for ever and ever. If I'm very lucky, perhaps one day I'll be owned by someone who wants to set such a mark on me, taking the decision out of my hands.

Well "fond of" can be seen as "loved". ( However the hanja is "爱 ".)

Thanks for linking the picture. The first character brings 3 guesses to mind. Going from least likely to most likely -
沽: inferior in quality.
From the meaning itself, it stands to reason that no one would really want that as a tattoo. (Despite the resemblance to the character in the image.)

洁 : means to purify, clean, pure.
The meaning is nice, and it's a possible choice as a tattoo, but from looking at the picture, I think on the right side, the top half and the bottom half are connected.

活 : means to live, exist, survive and be lively.
I think the top stroke is just covered by her hair and can't be seen, but I think this is probably the highest probability of what the word is.

The second character is correct. Previously mentioned, beauty.

The third character is missing too much, but if I had to guess, I would choose this:

好 meaning good, fond of, well.... all good things pretty much use this character.

Putting it all together, the three words become: 活美好, Life, Beautifully, Good.

And, yes I do believe that is Chinese. It's also grammatically incorrect. I wouldn't say words that way at least. I would probably say 活的美好, where the extra word (的) is like "is". I can see why it would be condensed to the 3 words because then all three words carry vital meaning without the extraneous "is". It's also very strange to include the "is" in a tattoo and I rarely see it.

活的美好 means "It's good to be alive."

It's usually said to someone else as a hope that their life will be good. Not just good, but beautifully, gorgeously so. It's a wish for life to be beautifully good. The connotation carries the aspect of thankfulness that the person has enjoyed such a good life as well as the hope that their life will continue to be great.

I think the best way of connecting to this phrase is the way someone would sit down after an awesome day and say "Man, it's good to be alive." mixed with a heart felt sincere, "I hope you have a great day" ... only extend day to 'life'.

Anyways. Sorry for the long winded-ness. Enough of my rambling. I hope that helps.

Umm shit, wish I had looked in this thread earlier, lol but you said Japanese.

I would like to officially confirm VT's translation. The third character is 'Hao' which means good in Chinese, the pinyin is difficult to see and I didn't make out half of the final character til I saw VT's post which made it much clearer.

Did I mention I studied Chinese in High School? Not fluent but able

One of many languages I'm able in...I really need to just pick one and stick to the study hehehe I'm limited to fluent Spanish and English currently.

So yeah, VT's 'it's good to be alive' would be the closest English translation you would get.

I think it's a very powerful statement for a tattoo. I'm going to enjoy working this into my character's personality. I can see how similar the characters are now VT has posted illustrations so you guys really have my respect for picking the overall sentiment out of partially obscured Chinese.
