I wear mine with pride, and it features in some of my stories. I bought it when I was nineteen and it still fits me. (I wasn't fat when I was nineteen either.)

What's under it is exclusively for my partner. Sorry lassie.

The last I heard, kilts, or something like them, are worn by men in Ireland, Bretagne, Bulgaria, and a few other places in Europe.

Scots of course have the monopoly on tartan. But today's 'tartans' were all basically invented by the birth of the Walter Scott-driven tourism industry at the start of C19. So they really aren't ancient in Scots terms. Even though my kilt's 'Ancient' Urquhart...
