They also have interest for English history.
Assignats devalued fast in 18th Century France. Soon after they were introduced, the French Government announced in the official newspapers that some were withdrawn and burned. The idea was that they would reduce the number in circulation to the value that backed them.
But the French Government lied. (What a surprise!) They sold them to English manufacturers who used them to pay their factory workers. The assignats had no value in England EXCEPT at the company's shop. The workers had to buy their food and clothing at the company shop with assignats - and were charged high prices, effectively devaluing their earnings. The practice was outlawed in the 19th Century but, because assignats had been used extensively in England, many have survived.
I also have some French coins of the period, made between the time of the Revolution but before the King was beheaded. They show the King's head but were made from the melted down bells of the Parisian Churches. The coins are so worn that I can't take a decent picture of them, but they too are solid history.

PS. I have 60 original copies of the official French newspapers of the time. They are fascinating reading. Apart from the denunciations and executions, they detail the debates in the French Assembly with projects for universal free education including a defined national curriculum, information from foreign countries, and then reviews of new books and the latest theatrical productions.
