Okay, I submitted my story twice, help!

The first time it was rejected because I had one word misspelled, and it was short a hundred words. I hadn't counted the words before, I just thought for sure is was long enough. Not!

The second time it was rejected because there is a "Nude Day Contest" running and wouldn't I rather enter it in that contest? Excuse me? I don't understand, if I had wanted it entered there I would have entered it, if it is okay to enter there why is it not then okay to be on the site in the regular stories. Then, there appears to be no way to get clarification from the faceless individuals who reject you for silly reasons.

Is there anything to be done, or do I just give up and hope they don't decide now to steal my story since they have chased me away.

Nobody at this site wants to steal your story. Try PMing Laurel (not e-mail -- make sure you have enable private messaging in your control panel) and tell her the name of the story and the response you got. Tell her you intended not to enter it into the contest and would prefer that it be posted as a regular story. I'm sure she will take care of it. Welcome to the club!

That was wierd (the do you want to enter it in the Nude Day contest thing). I've submitted stories to theme during the contests before but not to the contest and they've gone through OK. Maybe the editors are trying to do you a favor in case you meant it for the contest and forgot to put the contest slug in the notes box.

Sounds like all you need do is submit it again, with the note in the notes box: "Originally rejected with query whether it is for the Nude Day contest it. It isn't, thanks."

I'm pretty sure you weren't rejected because of one misspelled word, misspellings happen all the time (lots of them will get you rejected.) But the word limit is a clearly laid out rule. That's what got you rejected.

As for the Nude Day Contest offer, that doesn't sound like rejection at all to me. If you place your story in a contest, you "jump the line" and get to go first, you stay on the contest blog for a whole month attracting scads more readers to you and your story than you would if you chose to spend only 7 days on the New list getting fewer and fewer reads each day. They were trying to help you not hurt you.

Just submit again and be sure to put in the notes section that you're rejecting their offer for the Nude Day contest and prefer to go the usual way.

Why would they steal your story?

I didn't really think they would steal it...

I just didn't know what to think. The reason for rejecting it the first time made sense, okay fine, I fixed it, and sent it back. The second time just felt like a weird reason to reject it. It does say rejected, and under the helpful points, the only one was about the Nude day contest.

I did PM Laurel, after taking a deep breath. Haven't heard back yet, just got so excited about actually stepping across that line and submitting a story and then this?

Don't worry about it, my first story got rejected as well. My punctuation was totally wrong.

Laurel is usually pretty good about getting back to people and offering a more detailed explanation.

Take a deep breath and relax.

I'm glad to see you haven't lost your sense of humor cowboy!

As to the advice our MOONMAN gave you seemeemee a word of advice : this D.K.MOON had his story disqualified and they still put it in the contest.

If i were you I'd expect to see yours posted to the contest in the next couple of days. Apparently every submitted story is a potential contestant (or noncontestant as the case may be).

As Drip said, size is everything! Like 'no underage' or bestiality, you must hit 750 words at least, or else. From a quick review of any day' s submissions you'll see that a few spelling (or grammar) glitches are not usually reasons for rejection.

Again with Drip, why not have it in the contest even if you have no hope for it winning. The biggest problem facing newbies is getting the sunlight of publicity. The more places your story gets a link, the more chance you'll get reads. Also, why not stick a link here when it's up to get more attention?

No-one here 'steals' stories: in fact Laurel is often on her white steed defending authors' copyright against other sites. Whatever your worries, Lit would never plagiarize your work.

PS Scouries, please would you give your ignorant rant against DK a rest. There is no rule that stops an author posting a story to a contest he/she is not eligible to win. It happens all the time.

If you had any small understanding of the English language and could understand what you read, you would realise that entries on competition sites do not have to 'qualify' - hence no 'disqualification' - they are just not eligible for prizes. Like many others before him, DK has posted a story that is not eligible for the contest but is perfectly entitled to be here as it is germane to the topic.

Against your puerile polemic, Laurel has shown by the response to seemeemee that lit wants to cast the net as wide as it can to attract postings to the contests. Maybe we're not so anally fixated on porn stats as some lesser writers.

Thank you all...

I did pm Laurel, she straightened me out, politely, even though we all know I didn't deserve it.

I was not in a great place when I first wrote this thread, etc. As I told Laurel, it is a very odd thing this writing a story for the first time, shyly submitting it, hoping for the best, then getting a rejection response that seemed ambiguous. Kinda felt like sending my first born off to kindergarten only to find out the teacher didn't like her shoes or something. I know it makes little sense, but.... working on that.

Thanks again for all the level headed responses to point me down the right path. Hopefully the story will be in the contest soon (yes I realized that is a good place for it).

Now to finish story number two...

I know exactly how you feel. My first story was rejected due to punctuation issues.

Please let us know when it posts, I would like to give it a read.

No, your feelings make perfect sense, and we've all been there. Each time, but especially the first, I would count off exactly the 72 hours that made 3 days, then start hunting the list for it with my pulse beating. One time it was delayed a day, then two, then I saw the rejection notice! I didn't know what to do, I was that ignorant! Then I noticed the little link that would tell me why. I didn't understand it. I thought on it a day, then two days. Finally I humbled myself and asked for help. Somehow my file was corrupted. I resubmitted and had to wait some more . . . .

You are not alone. :rose:

My story "Alone" is in the contest

Yay! Now to figure out the whole voting thing. Some authors talk like they know what kind of votes they have gotten, etc. Does it show somewhere? Or is it my newbie pants showing... ;)

I am not expecting much since it was entered so late. But my first feedback sure made me glow!

Go to your Lit profile (not the one on the forums). This is where you submitted your story. Under "Submissions", click on "View". You will get a page which lists all your submissions. The number of reads and votes are listed, along with your score.

Yes, on the same page where you submitted your work. Click on Submissions and View. You will see your score, total number of hits and total number of votes, and any comments left for your story.

ETA

I read, voted, and commented on your entry.
