Don't forget that the sweeps will come along shortly after the submission deadline. There's usually a few small ones, a couple of big ones, and then the one that determines the final scores.

That's when the roller coaster starts. 1-bombs aren't the only votes swept. 5-bombs get nuked as well.

It's not uncommon for a contest story to be lower rated than your average submission. Besides the malicious voting, your story is also exposed to a wider audience than it might have otherwise attracted. The new people will often offset your fanbase, who naturally vote high, and it tends to drop the average.

The upside is that you most often add to that fanbase

Well, that makes good sense. I'm not really worried too much about scores or winning. I appreciate the opportunity to reach new people with my work.

Yes, Mr. scurvey, he did declare that D K gave "one-bombs," indicating that he sees them the same ways as Tx and I, and not as do you. Unfortunately it may be too late to help you better understand the mathematics of rank order. It is different from ratio or interval measurement. I expect you'd also see nominal variables in the same light and conclude that the average person is half-way between male and female. Perhaps you should consider an elementary (very elementary) course in basic (very basic) statistics.
