Don't forget that the sweeps will come along shortly after the submission deadline. There's usually a few small ones, a couple of big ones, and then the one that determines the final scores.
That's when the roller coaster starts. 1-bombs aren't the only votes swept. 5-bombs get nuked as well.
It's not uncommon for a contest story to be lower rated than your average submission. Besides the malicious voting, your story is also exposed to a wider audience than it might have otherwise attracted. The new people will often offset your fanbase, who naturally vote high, and it tends to drop the average.
The upside is that you most often add to that fanbase![]()
Well, that makes good sense. I'm not really worried too much about scores or winning. I appreciate the opportunity to reach new people with my work.
