We're having a big cookout this evening. My son has decided to make ice cream as his contribution. That would be wonderful except he's decided to use Emeril's recipe for buttermilk ice cream! Any idea how "un-ice cream-like" buttermilk ice cream tastes, especially since he's decided to leave out the crumbled bits of pralines that are supposed to be mixed in?

Oh, well. At least it will be better than last year's blue cheese ice cream.

A kiss from the good little witch.

Have you tried Hedgehog-flavor Ice Cream?

It has a faintly nutty taste. They used to use real hedgehog. Now they have an artificial "hedgehog" flavoring.

Doubt anything can beat durian ice cream. You have to be an aficionado of durian to get within three feet of it.

I would prefer Durian to be in the next county. I would have said country, except that the next country, France, is closer than the county boundary.

Their Blue Goats Cheese is "puyant" - smelly enough to have an impact across the Channel when the wind blows from France.

That cheese with Durian would be a weapon of mass destruction for olfactory nerves.

You all sound like the people who have to actually taste the bad milk from the carton to make sure it is indeed bad. Yeck!

GAG! Better keep a couple quarts of Blue Bunny Chocolate-Vanilla Swirl in the freezer for those who want real ice cream.

Blue Cheese ice cream? Please tell me you're joking.

Happy Fourth, glynndah.

No, unfortunately I'm not. Fortunately, my aversion to blue cheese is widely-known and I didn't have to partake. The smell alone was more than enough.

Note: He has made buttermilk ice cream in the past. It tastes like a slightly "wangy" frozen yogurt. Strawberry shortcake's also on the menu. It should be a fine topping.

Thank you, Tom. Happy Fourth to you, too!

I make ice cream, although mines a custard base. I cant imagine buttermilk ice cream... Happy 4th Glynndah.

In the New Reich the only authorized ice cream flavors will be artificial vanilla and artificial banana.

Blech! Will natural flavors be available for high ranking officials? Happy 4th Jim! Peppers are putting on like crazy.

I used one of his recipes for baby-back ribs. I had no idea Hoisin sauce went such a looong way. Anyone need a couple of jars?

I actually have a heavenly recipe for lemon-buttermilk ice cream. Let me know if the son wants it. It tastes rich and delicious (personally, I don't trust Emeril there. Few things he makes ever look very appetizing to me).

Oh, and remind him to check the carton of buttermilk before he uses it. Stores are notorious for not taking dated buttermilk off the shelves because it lasts so long. So it's easy to get buttermilk past its prime...and in that case, it will really taste bad.

I have homemade Vietnamese Coffee Ice Cream in the fridge. The raisins are macerating for the Rum Raisin Ice Cream. Then on to the Strawberry Sour Cream Ice Cream which is the SO's favorite. I have the Guinness to make the Guinness Milk Chocolate Ice Cream but that is not on the list for this weekend.

Buttermilk ice cream with pralines is sweet and sour. If you leave out the pralines, guess what.

You're all complicating things too much. Nothing beats a Panic Sorbet.

Frozen berries, booze, sugar and a blender. Boom.

Sweet and sour ice cream? blah

How about pralines and cream ice cream? Maybe even butter pecan.

Buttermilk is great for cakes, pancakes and waffles. Not ice cream! And BLUE CHEESE ICE CREAM???? I almost tossed the proverbial cookies on that one. YUCK to the 10th power!

Glynndah, you should have him bring the plates and napkins and stuff next time. He failed, game over.

I had non sweet garlic ice cream not too long ago.

It was only weird as long as you thought of it as ice cream.

My question is...WHY would you eat garlic ice cream if you weren't wanting ice cream? I mean...ewww! There have to be better ways to enjoy some garlic? Perhaps a cream sauce, not frozen?

Hey, On Cape Cod they have Quohog (Clam) Ice Cream.

Why not? Ice cream is just a mix of stuff that let you to freeze dairy products without crystalization. Just because it's unusual doesn't mean it's wrong.

It was a perfect side dish to wind down between a really spicey main course and the real dessert.

Just not to my taste, I suppose. I'm not much into unusual foods.

And the spicy main course would have put me off long before I got to the garlic ice cream. I can't eat spicy food. Or anything sour.

And yes, I've heard it before..."You're from NEW ORLEANS and you don't like spicy food????" I'm a misfit.

What "they" have are damaged taste buds if they think that's good!

Icky-poo-nasty-foul!

Bwahahahahahahahaha

I tried it once only because I won't say I dislike a food without trying it first. Let's just say while I like both Ice Cream and Shellfish this just wasn't for me.

In other words it was almost as bad as the Tuna Fish Pizza I tried in England. (Shudder)

hahaha, now this thread has just turned ugly! Fish pizza, odd ice cream... ACK!
