Can anyone explain????? For the SECOND week in a row, a story I wrote has been accepted BUT is not listed on either the "NEW" last few days menu, or on the "RELUCTANCE" menu.

The story can be read (if the reader searches under the stories title title [What Am I Doing Here? Ch 08] or the author's name, ILienBagby, but the omission cuts down readership by at least hald (as compared to when the story is listed on its proper menu.

WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?

A noted posted to Laurel or to webmaster did not result in a reply.

Where did you send your message to Laurel/Manu? First, it needs to be sent by PM, not e-mail. Second, this is a "today" story and it's Sunday. How much time have you given to get a response?

Beyond that, there's a time delay in where/when the stories list. Panic time is probably sometime tomorrow, not right at this minute.

If the first story ("second week in a row") is your chapter 7, that's listed in "Group Sex," not Nonconsent/Reluctance.

It's showing up on the New list now.

I feel your pain, as my last two submissions didn't hit the New list until mid-afternoon, losing more than half a day of exposure that severely crippled the reads and votes.

Unfortunately, them's the breaks. Lit processess 60-70 stories per day for posting, and we're lucky that they make it up at all with that sort of work load.

It sucks when it happens, but you've just got to roll with the punches and hope for better luck next time.

My last one didn't post until late in the afternoon. Worked in its favor (for a while). The usual zappers didn't find it (for a while). The late posting didn't hurt it's reading rating, though.

You're posting regularly enough for your readers to keep an eye out. I'm lucky if I put out anything every few months nowadays, and it's split up between three pen names.

So, it's partially my problem, but the late posting sure as hell didn't help! *laugh*

I used to be bothered by the late postings and appearing near the bottom of the new list when the story did go up, but I think it might suit my stories better now. The new day run seems more like having your story run down a corridor lined with trolls armed with cudgels nowadays. The damage gets swept off eventually, but not fast enough to avoid missing all the readers that get put off by the low score.

I'd rather sneak out late and let readers find me through the top lists or a search on the story tags.

Strangely enough (giving credence to the suggestion that there's some formula for where stories post on the new list), when my stories post (which is usually after others have already been listed), they are posted somewhere inside the list, not at the bottom. My story this week, which posted in the mid afternoon where I am, was inserted in the third listing spot on the New list.

Mid afternoon where you are is dawn somewhere else and late evening in yet another location.

In any case long experience of checking the New list tells me that Non-consent are usually (though not always) at the bottom of any given day's new postings, which would suggest an ordering other than chronological..

Yes, mid afternoon at Dark's location is morning in the high population centers of the mid-Pacific, Kamchatka and New Zealand! :D

I've already experienced the zappers. If I were in charge of the website I would come up with a solution such as if you vote you must comment with a 25 word (approx) explanation as to why you did or didn't like it. You'd get a better picture I think.

You'd get even fewer votes, I'm afraid. The majority of readers are not taking all of this as seriously as we writers do. While it might drive off the 1-bombers, it also might have the unintended consequences of pushing away the, um, satisfied readers who will take a second to click 4 or 5 before mopping up the mess.

Thanks to all the replies, I now have a slightly better understanding of WHAT. BUT, I feel that it is still wrong because it certainly curtail readership. Why not wait and post everything at once, or, if that is not practicle, why not post NEW stories by using subheadings of category and then all the stories for that category.

You're free to suggest this to the site-owners. As for it being right or wrong when this free posting site (which allows almost all comers to post) chooses when to upload stories, don't you feel that's a little unfair? As SR stated (or has in the past, I can't remember all the postings here,) there appears to be a very small staff and it's amazing how much material they move through seven days a week. We might, as freely accepted author-wannabes, have to cut them some slack. Even site owner/editors have doctor's visits, sick kids, potty breaks, and vacations.

They could choose any variety of posting methods. They could choose to upload a few hundred stories once a month. Wouldn't that be lovely to have your new baby story come out as Story Number 347 on the New List? Since they own the site, they get to choose.:rose:

Be sure to send a check when you make this suggestion. ;)

Doesn't matter if it's morning somewhere, a mid-afternoon posting is still a loss of 12+ hours on the first page of the New list, which is the primary driver of readership.

I understand and accept that it happens, but I don't have to like it -- because it sucks! *laugh*

Since I haven't posted a story in awhile, I really can't complain. Last time I did, I ended up somewhere in the middle. If you have loyal readers, they'll find you.

If you want more exposure for your work, enter contests. Although this is guaranteed to attract trolls as well, but we all have gotten our fair share of trolls one time or another.

To make suggestions to the site administrators, particularly Laurel, send her a PM or use that little Help Us Improve tab along the side of most Lit pages. Although I don't know how frequently those suggestions are checked by the site admins.

I couldn't agree more... think in business terms as readers being "market share". The best way to gain market share is to advertise, to get the brand name in the minds of the readers. Contests, even if you don't win, will help get your stories visible. Don't be afraid of posting multiple stories in contests either, there's nothing limiting this.

Or, as in my case, write your ass off. Put so many stories out there that readers can't help but stumble across your stories. Write in multiple catagories for one. Be prolific, which takes time, and only works if you're a decent to better than average writer. Create a brand name that people want to read.

I have 230 stories accepted, and more waiting, in numerous cats. Readers can't help but find me eventually, and when they do the comments and feedback are usually positive.

If you have the skill, volunteer to edit. I've learned a great deal in the process that only helps to make me a better writer.

Hope this helps.

That's the best advice I've ever seen you give. :rose:

Now, if I would only take it.

On one other site I use an explanation is demanded only for low votes (1 or 2 in Lit terms) which seems to meet both of your requirements.

Unfortunately nothing will drive off the 1-trolls or the envious authors.

Too true. It took me a while to get over the votes. It still stings a bit when a series I'm writing, which has consistent votes in the 4.3 or higher to see a 3.2 or so vote. But I know it's being low-balled and look more at the few feedback messages or comments of support. The lack of comments justifying the low votes is most frustrating, I could see if the low votes were justified.

The best payback is to write like hell, as I've done. Cram it down their fucking throats, make them choke on it! Damn good I'm over it now after so many years and I can contain my emotions, otherwise I might get PISSED!

Lol.

And here I thought the best payback was to have the story sold in the fee-paying market. :D

I was being a realist. Very few writers can earn enough income from their writings to "rest on their laurels".

Nice thought, however.
