Iran and North Korea to launch EMP attack on the US, Obama goes golfing!

That is nothing. We can control the weather just like we did Karina. We shall send them a hurricane.

It's a shame seeing America heading downhill and a second term of Obama could be both our ends.

You can count on Obama losing political power in the coming elections. 2012 is far too far off to tell yet.

You probably don't understand the mathematics's of ballistics. Let me try to educate you in very simple terms.

Let's assume a ship is positioned 500 miles North of Hawaii and launches a missile with a ballistic trajectory that will take it over Los Angeles.

The first problem is detecting the launch. That can't be done with current technology because a satellite has to be looking for a launch in the launch site. We have no satellites gawking at empty ocean.

Next, the post above said the starfish prime missile reached 680 miles at apogee, then detonated at 250 on the downward arc. Launch to detonation was 13 minutes. Realistically, the upward track lasted about 8 minutes, the turn a minute, and the downward track until detonation about 4 minutes.

From a launch point 500 miles North of Hawaii, we would have nothing available to hit the missile during its upward track, even if we detected the launch. As the missile approached the coast on its downward track we'd have 4 minutes to detect it, calculate it's track and speed, launch our counter measure and hit the missile all within a 330 mile descent.

UPS can track my every package. I can look into my backyard with the internet. We are realizing laser technology. Don't be like Alvin Toffler and get mired in the mathematics of your glory days there gramps...

If we had continued our research, we would be able to keep the idea of a missile launch just an idea instead of an achievable goal in the near future.

UPS tracks your package at point A and point B - not in between. The internet picture of your house is probably a year old. Lasers? What the fuck do lasers have to do with anything? Wouldn't a transporter beam work better? Just transport the bomb somewhere else

If we continued our research? Son, if pigs could fly we'd have pork Buffalo Wings.

We'll just have Iran scan the bomb before they send it...then tracking will be easy.

We've taken out missiles with them...

All you need it to track certain ships and hire the Xbox crowd to prevent an EMP. Hell, it could all be computerized, like in Terminator...
;) ;)

I'm certainly no expert in EMP bombs, but I don't think they would have as much effect today as they would have 20 years ago. Most electronic components are now shielded and the stuff that isn't is the stuff hanging on the poles that is replaced after every snow storm.

Power and communications would go down due to unshielded land lines, but it wouldn't be apocalyptic. It would have no effect on satellite communications so my tv would still work, and that's the important thing.

Yeah, no big deal...

Technology?
Technology?

We don't need no stinkin' new technology...

They's just barbarians is all; never amount to anything...

So... your position is that we've known about EMPs for 60 years now and have done nothing to defend against them?

Really, is that what you're saying?

You two can make fun of Obama over this if you want, but his potential reaction ought to scare the shit out of you.

What better opportunity to declare martial law and federalize the entire economy?

Ishmael

In the event of an EMP attack large enough to matter, the Federal government won't be able to do any such thing. They may pass the laws, but they would have little power to enforce them.

The land based military will be just as inoperative as the remainder of the nation - unable to even fuel airplanes except by buckets (no electricity = no fuel pumping).

Only deployed naval units at sea are likely to remain fully operational and those only until they required replenishment of fuel and munitions.

The only remaining power would be guns in the hand of the people and that only until ammunition runs out.

A total EMP attack leaves the US as little more than an 18th century agricultural state.

What a bunch of bullshit. Stop watching so much SciFi.

Funny thing how often yesterday's science fiction is today's (or tomorrow's) scientific reality...

Unless, of course, you allow government to get in the way.

You are doing nothing more than posting your uninformed opinions concerning the topic.

You do not even understand the level of dependency on electricity this nation has and what would happen in even a 1 week nationwide outage.

So in the past 60 years we've not shielded critical components?

OMG! It's y2k!!!

Look at the electronics in your house. Which item is shielded? Your made-in-China digital television that you hope will still work? Do they connect to overhead power lines? Does your buried line connect to a 750kv interstate transmission line? Do you think a power company can shield those?

No consumer level, hospital level, local, state government level, or even 99% of federal computer systems are shielded in any meaningful manner.

Only military systems, and even then only some of them, are fully shielded against EMP.

Or I suppose you don't use a "surge suppressor" to protect your computer from lightning because your computer is so well shielded?
