ROCK ON!

that should read; Kurt Weil's "Mack the Knife" as sung by Bobby Darin.

other than that, fun stuff!

here's a couple more for you;

What did Little Egypt wear? And what did she sing?

What kind of biscuit do you throw on the wall and it bounces back?

And.. how many minutes was that man? :D

A button and a bow. Yeeeaah. Yeeeaaah! (The Coasters)

(You got me there)

60 Minute Man (The Cadets?...umm...nope...they did 'Stranded in the Jungle')

Heh, I got 14 out of 30, and even that kind of surprised me!

I got 29 out of 30. It helps quite a bit that I collect 50s, 60s rock and roll.

Rubber Biscuit!

Little Egypt sang "Ying Yang, (gitchee, gitchee gitchee)"

Damned if I know why, either, but the Coasters were funny guys!

Sixty Minute Man was the Dominoes, and I had JUST gotten a link to a youtube vid minutes before I read this post, otherwise I wouldn't know either. ;) My linker claims it was the very first rock and roll song evah.

I got 28 out of 30 :D

And I had always heard the first Rock n Roll song was Rocket 88 by Jackie Brenston and the Delta Cats (which was really Ike Turner's band Kings of Rhythm).

At least that's what Sam Phillips claims (it was recorded at Sun).

If you haven't heard it, you should give it a listen -- Little Richard stole Ike's piano intro note for note to start Good Golly Miss Molly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gbfnh1oVTk0

That's what I've always heard. I've also heard that 'Little Darlin' by the Diamonds was the first 'Rap' song...I dunno about that...I'd say Bo Diddleys 'Say Man' and 'Say Man Back Again' were a lot closer to Rap...or maybe none of the above...listen and judge for yourself.

26 out of 30, and Kurt Weil wrote the music for Mac the Knife. The lyrics are an English adaptation of Bertolt Brecht's Moritat vom Mackie Messer from Die Dreigroschenoper(The Three Penny Opera).

Jackie Brenston was a saxophone player in Ike Turner's band. For whatever reason, Rocket 88 was released under the name of a band that never existed. And, yes, people should give it a listen. It was the forerunner of a lot of later rock 'n' roll and still sounds way ahead of its time.

I suppose it probably comes down to what your definition of rap is. I mean spoken word rhyming lyrics set over music probably goes back well over a hundred years -- well before any music was even recorded.

Gilbert and Sullivan wrote rap music and lyrics - in the 19th Century - but they called them "patter songs". They didn't claim originality even then.

During the run of a particular G&S production they would amend the patter songs to make them topical.

maybe (I love 'em) but at least Sullivan wrote a tune for them!

ROCK ON!

I had 25 out of 30, but some were educated guesses. The first one should have been "none of the above" because Little Susie was still asleep when the Everly Brothers were singing to her about the time and the movie being over.

According to Wiki, Rocket 88 is about two months older than 60 Minute Man, but pinning down the first recorded R & R song is like pinning down the birth of the Blues. It was probably done sometime in the forties and was a combination of Hillbilly and Jazz and the recording artists were probably Black.

I went to a doo-wop show last month, Ralph from Happy Days was the MC. It was expensive and kinda shitty. The lameness was off the charts fun though.

On a PBS doo-wop show they kept playing kingston trio, that ain't doo-wop.

Here's one for you:

The lyrics from what teevee show theme-song fit the music for 'Purple Haze' exactly?

Definitely not, although they were from ther Sixties and later. I don't know the exact definition of Doo-wop, unless it is being used as a synonym of Rock or Rock and Roll or The Bop or Rockabilly. When I heard the expression, I always thought of music with a strong beat and a lot of scat, such as Be bop a lula or Sh-boom or Tutti-Frutti or Hot-diggety-dog.

That last is a big part of the problem. RnR didn't just suddenly come about, it was a developmental process. Much of the early approaches to RnR were done by Negro groups. The problem was that the record producers were Caucasian and they had no idea if the new sound would sell. The first RnR breakthrough was Sh-boom. Then, most of the major record labels had to hire an RnR guy, because they had no clue as to what they were listening to.

The problem wasn't limited to record producers or Caucasians. Rocket 88 was recorded by Ike Turner's Rhythm Kings, but was attributed to Jackie Berenson and the Delta Cats. It would seem that Ike didn't want a posssible experimental failure attributed to his group.

According to Wikipedia, there isn't complete agreement on what is or isn't "doo-wop:"

I've always thought of doo-wop as being three or four part harmony performed a capela or with minimal acoustic acompaniment; by that definition, the Kingston Trio fits even though they were primarily "folk singers."

A lot of the original post's quiz isn't about doo-wop or even really about 50/60s popular music; there is movie trivia, popculture trivia and other non-doo-wop trivia mixed in.

Not according to these lyrics, unless there's another version. I listened to the song too and I think they're the right. It's one of their best songs. :D

The lyrics listed are wrong. There's another version of the lyrics where the line is stated as 'ying-ying,' also wrong. The YouTube audio is NOT the Coasters, but a rip off.

I collect 50s 60s RnR and I have the real Coasters version of Little Egypt. I went back and listened to the Coasters version again, just to make sure.
