Bush was calling for immigration reform when the Repubs held total control over the legislature. He laid out a plan in January, 2004, which was completely ignored by Repubs.

Bottom line: The Republicans had total control for 6 years and didn't do shit about immigration reform. No guest worker program. No path to residency (let alone citizenship). No secure borders. No reform at all.

And now we have Republicans (ie McCain) attacking Obama for being the reason we don't have immigration reform.

W-w-whaaa?

Check the voting record for the Bush bills. Betcha Obama voted "present" If he'd just agreed with the twelve Democrats who wanted immigration we'd have it! It's his fault! All his fault!

There is no issue too small that cannot be blamed on President Obama.

Just ask the Vettebigot.

But... Arizona HAD to act because Obama didn't do anything!

There are already 5 or 6 guest worker programs in place.

There's also a path to citizenship for all illegal immigrations.

It is called obeying the law and waiting in line with immigrants who come here legally from all over the world.

All that would be necessary would be to make E-Verify mandatory, universal, and permanent for all employers in America, with heavy fines for illegal employers.

That done, millions of illegal immigrants would know that the game was over and they would self-deport.

Yet something is amiss, no? The system isn't working. Or are Mexicans just inherently morally bankrupt?

Perhaps we're all complicit in the system not working? And by "we", I mean the government, corporations, and consumers.

At the time I posted he should be impeached over the matter.

You also said he should be impeached because he wouldn't provide his birth certificate.
You also said he should be impeached for signing "unconsitutional" health care legislation.
You also said he should be impeached for bowing to a head of state.
You also said he should be impeached because the weekend staff gave you regular metamucil instead of orange-flavored metamucil specified in your chart...

It's very simple:

As W found out, the GOP in power can't unite behind any immigration policy because the party itself is divided on the issue: The paleoconservative-nativist base wants a crackdown, but the business-interests base wants that cheap immigrant labor.

Out of power, however, there's no reason why the GOP cannot unite in blaming the Dems for their immigration policy, no matter what the Dems do or fail to do.

Conservatives always said that Bush was wrong to not shutdown illegal immigration. For them to say that Obama is also wrong is totally consistent.

Obama will be interesting in time….his push for healthcare, will it stand or be torn apart? Pretty sure that obama will go down as being worse than bush

FWIW, many of the right wingers here did post that Bush had dropped the ball on immigration. I specifically remember Ish and AJ both saying it. In Ish's case it was in direct response to my asking him why he had just posted that he didn't like Bush. I don't recall his other reasons.

ETA: Hi, Sean.
