I clicked pending!

And now chapter 4 is pending behind chapters 5 and 6!

I submitted my first story, chapters 1-2 were posted today. Chapter 3 is listed as pending, but not in blue? Today I submitted chapters 4, and 5-6. But then I noticed chapter 4 submission was listed after chapter 5-6 submission? I clicked on it to make sure I hadn't screwed up the chapter numbers.

Then I went to search for a possible reason why chapter 4 had been listed after chapter 5-6 in my submission activity queue. Only to discover that clicking on a blue pending, will place it at the end of the queue once "submit" is clicked again. But I found no information on why, or how I did whatever I did, to screw up the posting order?

If you can follow my ranting and can offer a suggestion... please do so?

Also, I couldn't even figure out where to post this question? "How To" seemed to be more a personal how to, rather than a technical how to. Well, I guess that depended on how you looked at it. Technological how to, that's what I was looking for.

Thank you!

Try sending a PM to Laurel in the Private Message system here. You might be able to get it straightened out that way. If not, I suggest just going with it (and not clicking on the pending button again. Of course that just sends it to the end of the queue again--you might solve it all by clicking on the pending buttons for whatever is now out of sequence as well.)

If nothing happens, they will all get posted in a few days anyway and straighten themselves out on your list. It's not arms and legs.

Thank you! But..

It still doesn't explain how chapter 4 got to be listed behind 5-6 before I had ever clicked on it. That was why I clicked on it in the first place?

Also, does the blue pending mean pending approval and the black pending mean "approved but not yet posted?"

You are right, neither arms nor legs.

Man this place is huge!

Okay, does Ch. 03 have a date listed, as well as the word not being a blue, clickable link? If this is the case, that means that the chapter will go live at midnight EST on the date listed. That's nothing to worry about. It happens often when you post chaptered stories and submit more than one chapter before the first is approved.

As to Ch. 04 -- exactly what do you mean by it appears "after?" Do you mean that when you view your list, it appears in this order

Ch. 5
Ch. 6
Ch. 4

If that's the case, the only way I can think of that happening is for there to be some sort of typo in the title. The order in your submission list will always be alphabetical, regardless of the order you submit them in.

If 4,5,6 all still have the blue pending links ( I'm assuming this since you only pointed out Ch. 3 as not having it ) then the surest way to make sure that they come out in order is to double check Ch. 04 for any typos in the title. Maybe you accidently stuck some character before the first letter of the title or something?

Then, click the pending link on Ch. 5 and Ch. 6 to move them behind Ch. 04 again. You might even want to edit the "NOTES" section to indicate that you have three pending chapters, listing the chapter numbers, and that you accidently clicked the pending links, so you don't want them to appear out of order.

Something in the "Notes" section makes sure that a live person checks whatever is there, and that will probably get any problem taken care of without further contact.

thanks!

Thank for your reply. I checked the spelling of the title, nope, nothing wrong there.

My pending queue looks like this:
Ch 1-2 approved (in blue)
Ch 3 Pending with Date 4/16
Ch 5-6 pending (in blue)
Ch 4 pending (in blue)

So I followed your advice and clicked on ch 5-6, entered notes in the note field asked that chapter 4 be posted prior to 5-6. Then clicked review, then clicked submit. But when my queue appeared again, it remained listed out of order?

I'm so confused but I feel confident a human will notice the out of order chapter numbers and correct it. I just want to know what I did wrong in the first place to have caused this.

It will (should) fall back into chrono order on your final list. They may post out of order if the editor doesn't catch the problem. But that should be fixed in the final listing on your page. A minor glitch, really.

Ahhhhhhhh... I believe I see now. I checked your submissions page, and the chapter is actually listed as Ch. 01-02

That dash probably changes the way Lit's somewhat strange alphabetical order works. It will probably always be out of order on your submission page, but with the chapter numbers on there, it shouldn't be confusing for anyone.

And since you used the pending click trick to send 5-6 farther back in the queue than 4, they should all post in order now.

You should be good to go :D

I hope so

But I am now wondering how chapter 1-2 became 01-02? Because I didn't type it in that way?

I will send a PM to Laurel just in case.

Thanks again.

I think that it's standard procedure to change any chapter/part/episode/book listing to the 01 format if you submit it with just 1.

Same goes if your title doesn't say "ch." or "pt." or anything, but just has a number. It will automatically get "Ch." unless you specify otherwise in the notes section.

There's nothing strange in using 01, 02 for chapter numbers. If/when you get up to 11, 12, the zero is the only way to keep the files in proper order in standard computer chronological indexing. This is what you do with file numbering of chapters in manuscripts in the publishing industry as a whole.
