Has this been posted yet? Window Seat vid. Erykah Badu

That horrible nasal sound she makes when doing what she considers singing is so off-putting I didn't even get to the part where she starts to strip.

LMAO! I've read several places that it was all about her upping her sales. She seems to think she's making a statement. Either way, I agree. She can't sing for shit.

Damn! I got "file not found". I spent a half hour yesterday, trying to find the "uncut" version, but every "uncut" version was the censored one posted on YouTube. I don't recall much about the music, but she sure has a peachy ass.

I've got to admit, the girl's not typical vid shape. She seemed pretty natural. The link's not working for you? I just tried it and it seemed okay.

As for her music, leaves much to be desired.

I'm on a Mac, which, as we all know, is far superior to a PC in every way, shape, and form - except viewing porn! So please tell me it's the censored version that blurs her bits, because it it's not, I just might have to go PC shopping tomorrow.

Don't do anything crazy! Come on DeeZire, put down the PC and step away, you know it's no good for you. That's it, nice and easy. It's all right. The video's been censored all over the place, it's not your Mac's fault....

Meh. Missed the video. I've heard the song, though. Nicely done, but more of the same, pretty much. Her first album and the live album after that enchanted me, but then I grew tired of her. I will say about her voice, though, I do love it. She's got a certain sweetness one can only compare to Billie Holiday.

Billie Holiday knew what to sing.
This mis-spelt walking advert has been given some bad advice on what to sing.

Saw the video before it started getting yanked and loved it. I like her for being real. Some people might not "get it," but that's okay. She's not a blatanly obvious Lady GaGa and I love that she's never tried to be that.

Needless to say, I dig her voice, I dig her sound, I dig her. To all those who think she can't sing or is about one thing, you're entitled to your opinions, but you just don't have the ear or mind for the way she does real soul/funk and what she's about.

New album's dope.

Personally, I would classify this video as "self indulgent bullshit." And I certainly wouldn't compare her grating, nasally vocals to Billie Holiday.

I hope what she is doing is for what she really feels, and not for record sales. I do not know her music, or her, so can't comment on either. I do always question motivation for expositions like this, they appear to be done for the dollar.

Nah. That's really her. When her first joint came out and exploded all over the place, everybody knew her as the girl with the head wraps. It was easy to identify her because of the wraps and also pigeonhole her into a look. Which is what the industry tried to make her continue to do for her career. But she wasn't having any of it and she ditched the head wraps entirely and shaved her hair off, which threw a lot of people off. Some said that was going to be the end of her career, but she's still here, still touring, still guesting on other people's joints while still making hers.

One of the reasons I like her is that she constantly rejects conformity. If she was in it for the buck, she would've played "nice" and would've long since disappeared into the bin reserved for singers who never got out of having only one hit and kept having the same image.

Even some people who say they like her are aren't really feeling the video and they're not required to. I'll take this video over the thousands of disposable and forgettable ones with equally disposable tacky-dressed hoochiefied (black and latina) women doing nothing but shaking their almost-near naked asses and titties in front of a camera and saying zilch. And most people are so conditioned to see and expect those, so they rarely bother to throw up a fuss over them.

Yes, but they are shaking those asses in front of paid audience that choose to be there. My issue is with the fact that she did it in front of people that weren't forewarned. How is that not blatant advertising with no consideration to other's rights?

Exhibitionist?

Many exhibitionists ply their trade with no financial reward. They do it for the rush, or because they're perverts. Believe me, I know.

Sorry, have a hard time giving her the benefit of the doubt. Besides, I'd be just as pissed if any religious or political group shoved their views in my kids face. Those parents should be able to bring their kids out without worrying about extremist.

I guess this is really an issue over how one feels about public nudity, whether for "art's sake," a political statement or exhibitionism/voyeurism pleasure. I personally don't have a problem with it in general, although I prefer it for art first over the political, much like what nude PETA activists used to do. I can understand the feelings of people who don't like it, even if I'm being completely liberal with my view. Every now and then people do gonzo nude photography in public here and if you're around to see it, then you see it. And it's like, "eh, whatever." But 95% of the time you never even know what's going on around you until someone throws it up on a website to show off.

In Erykah's case, the video is art and also making a statement. I also appreciate the thought and the process behind it. It wasn't done as titillation, or some "let's just fuck around with a camera and shock the piss out of people" kinda thing. I can find plenty of in-your-face public fashion billboards (at least here in NYC) that can come as close to nudity/simulated sex as possible without breaking laws that can offend people's sensibilities, if they chose to feel that way.

Yes but this isn't about people's sensibilities. I have a right to protect my kids from being exposed to that. Which is the point. Why not expose your view to people old enough to have a say? Otherwise it's shameless propoganda for the sake of the big buck.

What about people who don't mind it, and don't hide it from their children when it happens? What exactly is being hurt here besides your sensibilities on public nudity?

If she wanted to "sell" the song just for money's sake, she could have easily just made an ordinary booty-shaking video. And you probably wouldn't have blinked or even cared. But she meant to get inside your head and make you think about something. She accomplished that, whether or not you listen to her music or know who she is and what she's about. That's what art does.

Did you make this thread because of the video's viral notoriety in news media, or because you listen to Erykah Badu and was "shocked" at her behavior?

I agree. This kind of stunt doesn't have a mass market appeal. If she only wants the dollars, there's a mainstream commersialised / Hype Williams directed / big buck business she probably could be part of, but isn't.

The girl's anything but stupid. A video like this is meant to create controversy and get people talking about issues. Political issues, philosophical issues... what's acceptable, what's not? What's art, what's a PR stunt? Mission accomplished, I suppose.

Wow... my Mac is great for porn. Better video, higher resolution, even the sound rocks. Maybe you are looking at the wrong porn.

I made this thread because I was curious to see what people thought.

And by the way, 'Art' is not usually rammed down peoples throats, it doesn't have to be. If she had made the same video with people around who were there by choice and knew what she was doing, and there were children around whose parents were okay with them witnessing it, that would have been fine. There would have been controversy, which would have made her point if that's what she really wanted.

In any case, that's my opinion. What she did was illegal as far as I know. I hope she gets fined. If not, then I guess we can expect to see Lady Gaga walking around Central Park with nothing on but titty tassels. She can claim it's art. One gets away with it than why shouldn't they all?

I enjoy free expression, and was at first taken aback my the video thinking it was motivated by money, but I did some research and discovered that this artist (yes I call her that) appears to be just that, artist first and showman second. We can't really judge her motives, but for some reason I sense they are sincere, that she wanted to make a statement. We are free to react to it as we wish. She laid it out there, legal or not. In this case, I think it was courageous and sincere, but yes, I do agree that children should not necessarily be exposed to such as this. Adults? I suppose most of us have seen a naked beautiful woman, and if it disturbed our sensibilities we have a right to feel that way. Personally, I thought her natural beauty stunning, but that is my opinion only.

While "Art" isn't usually jammed down people's throats, it is that jamming that often creates perspective and change. It perhaps (poorly) can be likened to the "Art" of Rosa Parks as she challenged society on a bus ride, or the "Art" of Ceasar Chavez as he refused to eat grapes. Again, nonrealsitic comparisons but I throw it out there for discourse (I couldn't think of an artist who created change just at this second, but there are many examples). So soon, don't be surprised with all the copycats looking for a buck, this certainly increased her record sales, and Lady Gaga and wannabees will soon follow suit.

I believe it was Michel Jackson (before my time) who created a stir once when he grabbed his penis on stage, and now all that is commonplace, as is ass shaking and near nudity during videos, which much of I find more repugnant and much less "artsy" than this.

This artist can hardly be compared to Lady Gaga, the bodies of work and histories are to varied.

So I waffle at this, enjoying the rawness with a slight offense at the exposure of nudity to children. My two cents, which was given for free.

Respectfully,

Espie
