I don't think so. I'm sure you could still be procicuted for theft or something, but I don 't think it's like tampering with the mail.

I've been released. I've been given two months notice, but then I will be unemployed. I've gone from leaving at the end of August to the end of April. Continued in the thread about stuff that pisses you off...

The answer to your question is: none of us, because it is illegal for any company except the USPS to use our mailboxes. That's why the USPS has no competition for the delivery of regular and junk mail.

A monopoly like that may seem unfair to some people, but the downside for the USPS is that they are legally required to pick up and deliver mail, anywhere in the country, for a uniform price. So those of us who live in more densely populated areas subsidize the mail service for people who live in the middle of nowhere.

The USPS is facing a budget crunch, because volume of mail is way down - due to email and other types of electronic communication, as well as package and overnight competition from the companies you mentioned.

As far as I can see, the USPS has turned a profit in two of the last 39 years. Unlike a business, it can never fail because it has everlasting access to the government teat. Of course that line has since faded with Government Motors, Chrysler back from the dead twice, and certain banks deemed too big to fail. Snail mail is really obsolete anyway and should go the way of the covered wagon, 8 track, and the democrat party.


I'd gladly pay a little more to Brown or Fed Ex. At least they never stole dirty panties from me. Several times. Back in the 90s when I was into such nonsense.

The USPS does not have access to the "government teat" in the usual sense. USPS is an independent entity, under government control but not funded with appropriations. It covers cash shortfalls with borrowings from the Federal Financing Bank.

Still, you're right, the financials suck. Total debt outstanding exceeds $10 billion, and god knows how they'll ever be able to pay that back. What that tells me is that the USPS has been undercharging its customers all these years - especially the high cost, rural ones.

Of course, we know how the general public feels about an increase in stamp prices. Same way they feel about taxes! Hence the debt. The illusion of something for nothing - that's the American Way.

I'm mostly high about tonight, but not entirely. Tonight was event #2, an under-35's munch, where I saw some familiar faces and some new faces. It was very nice, even if I couldn't quite do it sober - next time, totally - and happy coincidence meant I could leave with the girl I'd rather like to leave with every night (I struggled to think of a non-crude way of saying that for some time). However, my nerve failed me when I left her at the station and I ended up merely nuzzling her ear when I attempted to kiss her goodnight.

Further, she promised to find me somebody to play with if I came to a particular club on Saturday and I completely regret not having the guts to ask why I couldn't play with her. I knew she was single and submissive, she knows I'm single and dominant. Hmph. Grade in general: C+
