Hey all.. Stupid question, and maybe I should post on the how to bit as well, but you guys are friendly and seem fairly savvy when it comes to technical issues, so I wanted your opinion first :)

I got mcafee when I got my new laptop. Its trial has run out now, and I need to pay to upgrade it. I dont mind paying, but like anyone I want good value when I buy something. Is it worth paying the money for mcafee or should I go with another option?
The free AVG service was also something I thought of, but I dont mind paying for the full version of that if its worth it (as it still seems cheaper than any other option like norton or mcafee).

I appreciate you listening. Please feel free to share whatever you know/think.

:)

I use Avira, it's free. I had AVG for 2 years but after a while found that it was freezing the system too often, what doesn't happen with Avira's product :)

What's this "antivirus" you speak of?

Sorry. Another smug Mac user. :D

I have a mac too, so its the best of both worlds! I use the mac when I am on the go, the new laptop was a cheap option to leave at home as it is bigger, plays some games that the mac wouldnt and can play blu rays...

Yes, I like gadgets! :)

Does it work with mail programs too - like windows live mail. I have always found this to come in handy.

Nax, my hubby and I do web design, so it's really important for us to protect our computers. Macafee is junk, so is Norton, just FYI.

NOD32, (Eset) that's the one our techie colleagues insisted we use and we've never had any problems. There is a cost but it's worth it. We also use AdAware (Lavasoft), it's free.

I would suggest to NOT run an antivirus open at all times. They slow your computer down. Cant stand them.

I recommend using Firefox as your browser running the NoScript addon (it pretty much stops you shitting up your computer with a single click.

Format regularly, and run the occasional system scan.

What I use

AVG Free version works Great (Got your Email Covered!)

I also use Free Zone Alarm (firewall)

I also use Spyware Blaster (protects against some 15,000 nasties)
I also use Spybot Search and Destroy (protects against some 140,000 nasties) Immunize!

All free! DONT bother paying, McAfee & Norton USED to be good but arent really anymore
Friends with those get attacked and I put my free stuff on there to help them out .. Kapersky also is a pain in the ass

BUT, thre are a few that if you get them (The "Rouge" antivirus) Where it says
Antivirus 2010 something something, changes your desktop and give you tons of pop ups on start.

The MAlwarebytes is exceptional at removing THAT one

Used to use Adaware, but it became kinda sucky in its current form

So, you're not just another pretty face ... ;) Your tech is right. With BitDefender and Kaspersky, NOD32 have led the race on best AV for the PC the last four years running. BitDefender and Kaspersky swap first and second regularly for best net. NOD32 and Kaspersky trade places for ease of use. As of 2008, NOD32 needed a few more tweaks to be fully Enterprise ready. Pick any of the three, spend a little money and you're golden.

MacAffee and Norton have been running neck and neck for the "how much of your resources can we suck dry before locking up your machine" prize since the 3~3.5GB memory limit established by XP. It doesn't matter that Vista (PoS only slightly better than Millennium) and 7 (jury's still out) raised that bar. Both are resource hogs better slaughtered. It's unfortunate the conservative enterprises still keep them afloat.

AVG is still probably one of the best free versions out there, but they regularly drop below the 90% successful net threshold. As long as you're willing to be cautious and don't mind the 10% risk, shrug.

Any browser other than IE (regardless of the version) is your first step in avoidance freedom. i'd slit my throat before allowing Microsoft to help me avoid malware. If they coded correctly from the beginning, the multiple vulnerabilities patched producing more vulnerabilities wouldn't be required and Microsoft Tuesday would be ancient history.

I'm not really an expert on this but I will say that I used ZoneAlarm before and found it to be really horrible. Eventually it locked up two computers so bad that neither one could be fixed. I had to buy two new computers. I was also very irritated that I would get constant emails from them warning me that I had to spend more money in order to get protection from the latest viruses. I thought that autmomatically came with a paid subscription!
