Ironic how? Before I continue I want make it clear that I believe we should repeal DADT.
That said, listening to someone doesn't mean necessarily doing what they tell you. It's like taking someone's advice. You can take someone's advice even if you don't do what they advise. It just helps you reach your decision.
Oh, I wouldn't assume you don't want to repeal DADT just on that statement, the question is perfectly legitimate.
"The day the leadership of the military comes to me and says 'senator we ought to change the policy' we ought to seriously consider changing it."
It was more that he said that if a leadership of the military were to come to him that he should take a serious look at it... what he took was distinctly less than a serious look at it or debate about the merits, his first reaction was to discount the admiral. Now he didn't say that he would change his view if the leadership of the military came to him... granted. Still, I found it funny that when presented with leadership supporting repealing DADT he pretty much restates exactly what he said in the first clip.![]()
well, its very hard to be a Republican Senator who
1. got his ass kicked in a presidential bid
2. got his ass kicked in a presidential bid, again
3. be supportive of treating gays and lesbians like human beings, worthy of all the rights of straight people.
Obviously, John-boy never thought this day would come.
Of course, in my experience, the older you are, the more likely you are to be supportive of treating LGBT people as second class citizens, so maybe it is all due to him being 72.
Fair enough.
Okay, I don't care what your experience is. That's still prejudiced.
I'm not saying all people over 60 are anti-gay
I'm not saying all people over 60 are anti-gay, just that, statistically, you are more likely to be pro-gay rights the younger you are.
Call it prejudice if you want, its also the reality.
Things like DADT, and gay marriage get closer and closer to getting resolved as (and I know this is morbid) older people die off.
I would imagine that race relations change as previous generations die out as well (though I can't say with any authority at all).
Change is difficult. Kids today are born with homosexuality just being a fact of life. Almost every kid is going to know at least one gay person. So they don't really have to change their perspectives.
The older you are the less likely that is.
*shrug*
(not that there aren't plenty of hate-filled young people too...)
be offended if you like, but it won't change anything from a political perspective.
