My sketchbook

These are some of the random things I've done over the past few years. If the file has an "FS" in the name it was a figure study of a live model done in a college art class, usually in a combination of hard and soft vine charcoal and charcoal pencils. If there is no "FS" then it was done in my free time, usually using only a #2 pencil and my imagination. I apologize ahead of time for the quality of the files. The only means I had to get them onto the computer was the camera on my cell phone. Most of them wouldn't fit on a scanner if I had one. Hope you like them!

Looks like I'm gonna have to do this in chunks.

P.S:fey_me is one of my all time favorites.

And we are done... for now. If you haven't noticed by now I have a tendency to start things and not finish them. The ones I do actually finish take forever because I fuss over them so much. :)

Like I said, its one of my all time favorites. It was done in 3 hours using a mechanical pencil. I used my own body as a reference for the proportions to make her as realistic as possible. Needless to say I don't have wings or flaming hair. If only...

I can't get the light flash out. But this cleans it a little. Done with corel suite.

Thanks Espie! I'm kinda clueless when it comes to manipulation not involving physical drawing materials. The most I did with these files was pop the contrast up a little and make them black and white. My camera phone has an awful tendency to turn everything yellow for whatever reason.

Its always been kind of a hobby for me. I took a few classes in college for the hell of it. My professors were always surprised I wasn't an art major. Wouldn't be nearly as fun if I depended on it for a paycheck. As it is I can draw what I want, when I want to. It's very freeing. :)

In my opinion, FS Male 3 is the best by far. It has the most embrace of light and shadow, detail, and texture. The others are good but quite a few of them lack depth. The facial close ups come close to the one I liked best.

I do a lot with charcoal and pencil, they are my favorite mediums to work with. Do you ever start by using charcoal, coloring your entire page black and then using a gum eraser to start to "draw" by taking out all of the highlights? It's like sketching in reverse and has produced some very interesting results for me.

I have done the subtractive drawing and it does produce some very interesting images. FS_face2 was halfway done in that manner. I started her entire facial space in a medium gray, erasing for lighter areas and adding darkness for shadows. It really forces you to evaluate the way light and dark interact more. That was a one hour sitting so I never got to finish it.

Its funny you should mention FS_male3. It is one of my favorite/ most disgruntling peices. It was a three day sitting and I was starting the last hour of the last day, working away at the details, when the easel attatched to my drawing bench fell on my hand. The metal strip on the bottom that slides out to rest your pencils and such on landed edge first on my drawing hand. I had been reaching for something in my pencil case beneath it. It sliced the back of my hand open. I just kinda pulled it out and looked at the wound. It was about a half inch long and open so that I could see the pink muscle and white tendon in my hand, and then it started bleeding. I walked over to the sink in the studio without a word and put it under some cold running water. I guess one of the other students motioned to the professor and he called a break. He looked at my wound and told me to put a paper towell and some pressure on it while he went to get bandages. The model came over and asked if I was ok. Drawing a naked stranger is one thing, having one stand a foot and a half away (I was seated by then) and ask you a question is quite another. The professor came back and bandaged up my hand and told me to go home. I tried arguing. I thought my drawing was coming along well and I really wanted to have as much time possible to work on it but he wouldn't have it and off I went. My hand was throbbing painfully with every heartbeat and I was royally pissed that I would never get a chance to finish that drawing out better.

As far as the other drawings go, many of them were time limited, making it impossible to reach the level of detail and depth that FS_Male3 got to. Some were ten minutes, or thirty or an hour. I got a good bit of practice at capturing the basics pretty quickly but I've always loved the little details and subtle variations best. :)
