Though I know for a fact people this nuts exist, pretty much everything the naysayers said from the beginning about "reality television" is leaking out as being true. Most of these shows - especially the new ones - are scripted and edited to a degree wherein the phrase no longer applies.

They recently blew the lid off of Pawn Stars, for instance. Items they showed being restored actually were never touched - other good-conditioned items were used as stand-ins.

When I hear "tiara", the first thing that comes to mind is "pageant".

Yup, like you say, there are a lot of moms who fit that "ugly when young, now living through daughter"...there are also quite a few who were very pretty when they were young, and grew up in environments where outward appearance for girls was king. Now they're simply passing that poison down.
