Hi everyone,

I'm in the process of writing my first submission to Literotica after being a fairly regular reader for some months. It's ridiculously long but I think that's because I did an English Literature degree and get far too lost in the story behind it all :) Anyway, I hope when it appears on the site that you enjoy it.

Is there anything I should be doing here before I submit for the first time to make sure my story is up to scratch?

I don't really know how they work to be honest, at least not the subtle intricacies...it's two characters who have recently been through difficult break ups and who meet by chance on a Valentine's retreat (sounds ridiculous but I hope I've made the characters completely believable...most of the length is in the back story and therefore makes their relationship real)

?

I'm such a newb :)

Hi, Sugar, and welcome to Literotica and the AH.

It sounds as if your story should be in the Romance category. Those stories are usually somewhat longer and explore relationships, rather than just being about sex. :)

From the sounds of it, there should be no problem with running afoul of any Lit. taboos. Remember, don't let any of the sexually involved characters be under 18 years old.

A welcome  for the little newbie from the good little witch.

Hey boxlicker :) Thanks for the advice! I'll post it in Romance then - it's definitely got a focus on the relationship as well as the erotic - possibly moreso in fact.

Thanks for your welcomes everyone! I should be able to finish the story tonight and submit it - I hope when I do that you enjoy it :) I'm enjoying writing it!

It's ridiculously long...

Sugar, I have a similar problem in that my first, and so far, unpublished stories are ridiculously long. I have yet to master the art of the Short Story. One story started at 78 pages. I edited it down to 65 and now am stuck.

And because the principle character has erotic thoughts and acts on them, towards a young girl (under 18), I've had to rewrite parts of the story.

Welcome to lit!!

Oh no! Mine isn't quite that long - I just submitted it. It's pending. I'm scared about what people will think...typical, I'd imagine! It's 3 pages long on the site. Approx 8500 words. Maybe it just felt long to write...

Congrats, Sugar.:D

It took me a year to build up the courage to send in my first......

The secret of the short story is limiting the scope of the work to one issue, problem, conflict. Like this: A drunk phones the ER and announces that he's just eaten a bottle of pills and immediately passes out. Thats the beginning. Efforts to locate him is the middle. Finding him is the ending.

If you wanna write a novella increase the issues, like: Young mom brings baby to ER, young mom flirts with nurse, MD observes flirting and is jealous, MD botches her examination of the baby and has a fight with the young mom, young mom complains about the MD, MD makes a medical neglect complaint against young mom, Child Welfare puts young mom thru a wringer, baby really was sick, state investigates MD, panel of docs determine MD erred and made a false neglect report, MD loses job at the hospital and consult position with the state, young mom gets baby back from the state.

Three pages isn't considered long by Lit standards. And you'll find a lot (LOT) of romance in Erotic Couplings. Check out FirstKiss. She's quite popular (because she's good!), always sits on the top list of the genre, and you can't get more romance than her stuff. She's not even heavy on the sex, either.

Good luck, and welcome to the AH. :rose:

Post the two first paragraphs here please, then a couple from
the middle.

Nurse, nurse, my bedpan if full, get your ass over here and
empty it...

Meow, meow! Ouch! Don't bite my so hard!

It's up! It's called "As Bad as Each Other", in the Valentine's contest. Please comment - I'd love to know what you think. It's my first time writing anything let alone erotic stuff. I posted it in Romance because it didn't get to the sexual points anywhere near as quickly as some of the stuff I'd read in Erotic Couplings did, so I played safe...who knows. It might not be romantic enough for Romance, or erotic enough for Erotic Couplings!

Could some of you read through it and advise for future writing? If it's ok I might write some more.

As Bad as Each Other
