Warning: Graphic content!

Here in the Midwest, we have a little thing called winter. With winter comes the joy of winter storms. Sometimes they come in the form of whirling white with frigid temperatures. Sometimes they come with sheets of rain that turn to ice on contact.

It was the sheets of ice that came pouring from sky this week. The day it began, the temperature dropped just below freezing, making the commute to work interesting, to say the least.

It wasn’t the commute, though, that caused the trouble. It was getting from the door of one’s house to the door of one’s vehicle.

Some of you know my webmaster and graphic artist, Joey Walnuts. Those who know him instantly like him. He’s a giant teddy bear of a man with a wicked laugh and is quick with a joke. He’s fun, creative and intelligent, and there’s nothing he wouldn’t do for a friend.

In the past months, he's had shoulder surgery, a nasty bout with flu and a nose-bleeding incident that cost him a pint of blood--and his nose had to be painfully cauterized. But fate wasn't finished with him yet.

This week, while walking through the raining ice to his truck, Joey took a hell of a fall. With the truck door open, his feet skittered from under him and he landed on the bottom rail of the truck. His feet kept moving, pulling from the floor rail to the concrete on the ground.

The injury was bad. It was more horrible than you can imagine. I’m told it will take months for him to heal.

Yes, that’s right. He bruised his coccyx. There is no real treatment for a bruised coccyx. Ice, painkillers, one of those funky donuts to sit on seem to be his only recourse. Maybe a little TLC will help.

Any volunteers to kiss it better?

Damnation that looks nasty! It's a miracle he didn't injure his spine.

He has my hearfelt sympathy.

He can't sit. Walking is difficult. Standing is painful. The man is in a world of hurt.

And all you can do is live through it. Try to get him to sleep as much as he can through the next few days.

I already told him that. He, being a man, is being very obstinate about it. I think this is the one thing that might just slow him down, though.

We are good at obstinate to the point of stupidity. Not sure how he is, but when I feel like shit, I am a (bigger) asshole. Okay curmudgeon. There, I said it. I get grumpy(er).

I'll bet you're cute when you get all curmudgeony.

Good night.

Finally got a chance to run by and check on Joey. Dear heaven, what a miserable soul. It was painful to watch as he shambled about the house, unable to sit, unable to stand in one place. He's losing weight from this, his face pale as he grits his teeth with each step.

Here's an updated photo of the damage.

Can you say, "Ouch"?

Weed would help him feel better. Probably won't kill the pain or do anything to make it heal... but it would help him feel better. :cathappy:

It's enough to bring tears to the eyes just thinking about it.
My old grannie used to use Tincture of Arnica
( http://www.naturallygreen.co.uk/arnica-liquid-extract-tincture-arnica-montana-100ml-p-254.html )
and it fixed a lot of my young bruises.

I have an update on Joey's condition. He is currently able to sit again--with great care and attention to the damaged area--and is feeling somewhat better. He says his "ass looks like a sunset". Not a pretty image that comes to mind...

Perhaps one of those donut cushions would help?

I'd say 'Fucking OW!' That looks nastier than the last photo. The poor guy. Now it looks like a rainbow? You gotta get a pic of that. :D

Seriously, tincture of arnica will STILL help-- even on old bruises. Guys, I cannot recommend the stuff strongly enough. There are two things that is does; one is help move the blood out of the bruise, faster than you can believe, and the other is that it will deaden the nerve endings while you wait for the bruise to go away. Get it on quick enough and there simply won't be a bruise.

Keep it out of your mouth and don't swallow it though. Strictly external use!

Poor guy!
