How do I respond to feedback?

I just posted my first story and I received two feedbacks via PM, but the message says "do not hit reply button". So, how do I reply to a question one of the people asked me?

I also got a nasty review in my public comment section. The only option available to me is "delete this post". I don't care to delete it, but I would like to respond to the person. How do I do that?

You can respond to all of them IF they left a way. The feedback into your email should have a return email if you look closely enough. If it was anonymous, it will say that, too. If that's the case, then you can't respond. Same with the nasty review, you can click on their name, if they left one. Some writers choose to respond by leaving a public comment if they have no way to respond.

Hope that wasn't too confusing. It's really very simple. :rose:

With violence...

At least, that's how I prefer to respond to negative feedback.

Thanks for the input people. I guess I need to get a thicker skin if I am going to make it around here. I was taken off-guard by a person lecturing me about my morals and lifestyle choices on a website featuring erotic stories. In hindsight I should have said it was 100% fantasy and put in the silly "practice safe sex" disclaimer. Then I could write anything I want:confused:.

For the people that have been here for a long time, do you allow anonymous feedback on your stories? If so, do you respond to them? I feel like I am chickening out if I let a personal attack go unanswered, but then of course, you are just encouraging the small minded people.

Kim, welcome.

People can send you anonymous mails that you can't reply to - just delete them if they're nasty. With public comments you can get anonymous insults that hurt but you can't respond directly - except as you did in the comments. You can delete them, but I only do if they are drunken drivel or insult other lit members. As you say, a rhino skin is required here.

As far as I know, PMs must be 'signed' so you can reply to the sender.

I read your story and see why you provoke some reaction.

This is a fiction site and it actually works against a writer to say 'this is a true story'. Many commenters assume the wildest erotic fantasy is real and fail to differentiate fact from fiction - as with you.

On your story, presumptious as you didn't ask, I have a couple of points.

I assume you were writing a 'stroke' story but, for me, you got all non-consent with no real reluctance until the last para. Even us girls have rape fantasies but you didn't dwell enough on her mixed emotions and let her seducer appear as an insensitive rapist. You do need to tickle our libidos.

In using first person you have a distracting habit of talking to the audience and putting us outside the events. First person is for more direct emotion, in my opinion.

Also, in fiction, brackets are best avoided as are use of numerals for age, height and breast size. In fact, there is no real need for measurements: tall, short; big. small, etc work well and let us imagine.

IMHO a good first post and don't be discouraged and write more.

Good luck

I don't think such disclaimers are good ideas. They start your stories with "howevers" and apologies. You start chipping away at the readability of the story all by yourself. It also doesn't stop anyone from sending you the type of feedback you describe. And they will just love it if you respond. Doesn't matter what you say. They have you hooked into an exchange on their turf that they are going to get the kicks from that prompted them to comment in the first place.

On the other question, yes I allow anonymous feedback on my stories. If anything is posted I consider to be a personal attack (or irrelevant to the story), I just erase it--I don't respond to it. The site gives its authors the capacity to just erase what they consider to be abusive, irrelevant, or whatever.

Just like our Secretary of State, I'm going to hit the reset button. I'll change everything I can so people think it is 100% fantasy. It is cathartic for me to write about these events in my life as the have irrevocably changed it. Mostly for the better, believe it or not. This is something that I can only talk to the people involved and one friend that I can confide in. That's hard, I have things I'd like to get off of my chest. I am looking for an internet forum where I can discuss these things anonymously, I'm open to suggestions.

Elle, I appreciate all sincere input. I haven't written much since college and I am out of practice. I'll take a little more time on the final draft next time, but I still need to write in my own style, which means I'll never win any prizes, but I'll be satisfied.

I have started the second chapter, so that will be next. After that I will probably do just fantasy stuff. I have two long stories. One that I can't find, and the other that needs a ton of work.
