I have been think about getting a tattoo but don't know what to get or where to get it. It will be my first.

Does any one have any good ideas?

you probably picked a bad place to post that question.

i think most of us will probably tell you that if you have no idea what or where you want the ink, then you probably shouldn't do it. or get a fake one.

seriously, it doesn't sound like you've really got a clue why you want something permanently stuck on you if you have no idea about these two most basic things.

think about what holds real meaning for you, and your lifestyle (what will your work say about visible ink) before you come back and ask more questions. otherwise, knowing the awesomely humorous people in this section of lit (no sarcasm there, really) suggestions could run from a tattoo of my foot on your ass to pink kittens on your ankle.

...or get a fake one.

I think that fake tattoos are like dildos. they're easy to wash off, you can keep them hidden from mom, and you can have multiple ones of different sizes without anyone knowing or complaining. Get a fake one till you settle down with a real one. Unlike a husband/wife, you can't divorce a real tattoo.

so no real ideas then.

I work in a fashion retail outlet, they don't mind as long as it is not to out there or if so can bee coverd up.

fake. lol

I had no real idea the first time I got one so I designed my own, took it along and that was that. There's a good site called tattoo johnny.

Tattoo ideas

I only have three. One an impluse tat, from college days. The other two, I not only thought about for months, it literally took months for me to design them. I at both times, had an idea and a really moving event in my life at the moment that I wanted to remember (at least the significance of), that inspired both of them (yes they are visable by most).

You need to remember, its there forever - so someone else's idea, is a really bad idea.

I can tell you, or suggest that you DO NOT go to a tattoo shop and pick out flash from their catalogs. I figure if I am going to wear it on my body forever, I want it to be original and MINE, not something out of a catalog.

Think about it, and don't rush into it. But, do have fun with it.

wait until you know for sure what you want it to be. I waited 26 years and it was worth it.

also if you are going to get one, make it a well thought out one and not some little scribble. tatts fade and go blurry with age so think ahead. something small on your inner thigh or chest may look cute now but won;t look so good in 30+ years, so go as big as you can.

if you are still quite young and not set on a career, have it somewhere where it can be easily hidden because the last thing you want is to be condemed to a life of working in a burger bar or bike shop because of the tattooed sleeve. Wait untill you are indispensible and have a good rep :D

and if in doubt, don't.

oh yeah! seconded!

check out his or her artwork, especially original work. you have to have someone who can draw!

took me months to decide what I wanted and where.
It has to be something you really want 100% or in a few years you will regret it!

Everyone is getting tattoos. Do you really want to be like everyone else? It's no longer edgy if "everyone is doing it."

As i_h said, if you can't figure it out all on your own, don't get one.

I could pick a dozen different things, but you'd have no clue what they meant.

Find something that symbolizes something that is important for you. You have to live with this for the rest of your life. As you age, it will not stay exactly where you put it and it will not be pretty and crisp and clear for the rest of your life. Hell, I have one that's 12 years old and starting to blur. But guess what?

It means something to me - it's a reminder that I will always carry with me... and in another 35 - 40 years when it's wrinkled and faded and no one can tell what it is I will know what it is and it will still be important to me because of what it represents.

If you think the ink is the most important part of the tattoo, you might want to revisit the idea in another couple of years.

Though, if you don't believe us you could always go for something big and tribal that wraps all the way around your ankle and spreads down over the top of your foot. That's fairly easy to hide for work.

I'm getting my next tattoo when taxes come back. It'll be #5. And the best part: No one will get the reference unless they're as odd as I am! :D:D:D

Why do YOU want OUR ideas for YOUR tattoo?

You want a batch of complete strangers to tell you what to get permanently etched into your skin for the rest of your life? You're far too trusting an individual.

If you don't know what YOU want, then you don't need the ink. If you MUST have one because it's the cool thing to do, go to the shop and pick out one of the crap pieces off the wall.

It'll make as much sense as letting internet strangers pick out your art.

So most here will get it at a glance.

Depends on how old school you are with your music.

My mom and my brother are the only one's so far that have heard about it and didn't have to have it explained. In detail. With an auditory reference.

But things like that amuse me.
:D

ETA: In all reality, I'd be surprised if more than one person here did get it. If that many.

I know a lot of people get tattoos to be edgy, but not everybody does. I have seven and they're all deeply personal to me, I didn't get them to be cool.

I understand. I just think it's ridiculously trendy (and stupid) right now for a lot of people. Personally I'm not into body modification much except as a oddity to gaze at such as the dragon tattooed penis. I'm not fond of piercings either. Anything that it seems everyone is doing bothers me on a deep level. That's just me.

That dragon penis (and scrotum) is fucking AWSOME dude.

Okay, this may not not be something you've thought of yet, but it's perfect:

A cautionary piece of body art recalling the national nightmare of the Teapot Dome scandal.

I want a panoramic scene of the oil reserves in Wyoming, with President Harding as the Grim Reaper, Interior Secretary Albert Fall as a flying baboon, and oil magnates Harry Sinclair and Edward Doheny as fifty foot tall leaches.

Then I'd like about a thousand tiny Americans, in 1920s clothing, gathered around their feet, desperately trying to voice the will of the people.

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! :D

My new tat's going to be a daisy on the second toe of my left foot. Just the stem and flower, not the root.

Again, way old school for tunes. It's also the second song I ever learned to sing and my mom/bff's favorite flower.

(I'm curious to see if anyone get's the reference:D)

I'm going to have to think of this and then probably admit I'm stumped.

That won't fit around the OP's ankle and over the top of their foot.

Really, they need to get one around the ankle bone, across the Achilles Tendon and over the top of the foot... with some trailing pieces going down between the toes.;)
