Hello all,

I'm developing an idea for a new story, and tattoos are a key element--namely, how people use tattoos to express, project, and shape their identity.

If anyone is willing, I'd be grateful for a description or picture of any tattoos you have, with a few words about why you chose that particular tattoo, and what you think it expresses about you, or signifies to you.

Many thanks!

I have a pink lotus flower on my back with a tiger bursting out of it. The flavor of the design is Oriental. It symbolizes passing through a difficult part of life and overcoming it as strong and beautiful as a tiger.

Thanks, Veritas--that's just the kind of personal story I was hoping people would share. I don't have any tattoos, myself, but I've always liked the idea of signifying things one has gone through, reminders of what one wants to be, how one wants to live, etc. Thanks for sharing!

I have a tat of my clan symbol on my arm with a Claymore sword running through it. I got it once I learned my family history and was proud to get it. It wasn't as painful as I heard it would be, but pain is just something we deal with when the end result is more important. I didn't have any colour put on it though, as it stands out well on its own.

It's nice there's a graphic that calls up your family history like that. There are exceptions, but I often prefer simple monochromatic tattoos, myself. Thanks for the post.

I could never come up with a design that I wanted permanently attached to my body. I've got nothing against the idea, though. If I'd been to jump school, you can bet I'd have had jump wings tattooed somewhere. The Army once threatened to send my entire unit but it never happened.

My daughter has two. She's been profiled on a site called "Tattoosday" and it's a great spot to check out people's stories about their tattoos, some anonymous and some not.

I can relate--I'm far too fickle to commit to spending the rest of my life with a design/symbol/piece of art for the rest of my days.

Recidiva! Lovely to see you!

Thanks for the site suggestion--looks like there's a rich load of images and stories to mine there.

Yay! I hope it helps. Both my husband and daughter have tattoos. My husband's were the drunken military variety and daughter's have meaning to her personally and symbolically. She did lots of planning and consulting of artists before she got hers done, and one is a tattoo of the Caterpillar and the Hookah from Alice In Wonderland - done fortunately by a tattooist who was also a Disney artist here in Orlando. She's thrilled. She has another on her ankle of her father's sun sign, a plus sign, my sun sign and an equal sign and then her sun sign.

So Libra symbol + Pisces symbol = Aries symbol.

And she says she even put her father first because he'd want to be, but she really just wanted me closest to her.

I'm not big on tattoos myself, and I doubt I'd get one...but it's a nice site with a lot of good art and good stories, enjoy!

I have four, and I drew the originals myself. no significance behind them other than liking my own art. I have a dragon on my right arm at the deltoid, a phoenix on my right shoulder blade, a tribal fish on my left shoulder blade, and a flaming sword on my spine.

Hey Varian, I'm a fan of your writing.

I have the four color Lakota medicine wheel on my left forearm. My mother's family is part indian, though they're far from Lakota. I just liked how simple it was, and I served as a medic so it seemed like it made some shamanistic sense. It also reminds me that I'm a little indian when I forget.

My other tattoo is technically two because it's on different body parts: 'Follow' on the back of my left calf and 'Me' on the back of my right. It was really just an uber masculine thing I did with a few buddies after we finished boot camp in Georgia. If I could go back I might wipe this one, because once you put a mantra on your body it loses some of its magic. Plus, if you're in Columbus, GA you'll see it all over people.

Ive got a cpl of dolphins because i love them and love to watch them, have pictures of them all over the house and another tattoo of a dragon,i just like the design of it.My next one will be a scorpian

I remember Columbus. That's where an April snow of about 4-5" paralyzed the state! Funny? Man! Being a cynical sergeant type, I always believed what the statue in the Infantry School was really saying was "I've had it up to here!!" :D

I have approxiamtely 40 tattoos, each of them gotten for a different reason. A lot form part of the larger pattern that co-ordinates the individual units. I have a triquetra between my breasts as a symbol of a commitment to my religion. I have a Celtic band around my wrist symbolising my religious vow to never eat veal or pick a particular kind of flower, which is my totem plant. I have the annwn on my neck, which is associated with the gift of the gab, important for a writer. I have 'I love me' tattooed on my wrist to reminder myself to be kind to myself (people think it's hilarious). I have my first name, Violette, tattooed on my chest to celebrate my name change. I have two emporer moths on the inside of my arms done to celebrate marrying my current husband. I also have the first haiku I got published tattooed on the inside of my left arm. A lot of my other tattoos have a heart shape because I seem to keep doodling hearts despite the fact I am really not romantic and I figure my subconscious is trying to tell me something. I hope that helps.

Trash wear tats. Its a scientific fact. I said the exact same words to my daughter when she got one.

Tats are how the girlz signal what team they play for. Its like rotten teeth.

You know what?

you're entitled to your opinion and I say roll with it. It's obviously worked for you thus far and I won't even try to disabuse you of it.

I play for both teams.:) Did you know that a recent study found that one of the fastest growing groups of the tattooed are the college educated and the level of their education corelated positively with the level of tattooing. You're very fast to judgement and this comment shows you're not really thinking but reacting gutwise. Shame on you JBJ, you should know better.

I've lived long enough to know that Friday's payday, shit doesnt flow uphill, and which end is 'up'.

The dummest people I ever knew I met at college.

80% of serial killers have tats, too.

emphasis mine.

I hope you did that as a bit of humor.

Obviously you have not lived long enough yet to know that you cannot make universal declarations about large groups of people. It might appear to work from the long view, but up close this kind of thinking doesn't swing. You dissapoint me.
